VOC Port inks ₹90,936 cr MoUs at India Maritime Week 2025 to drive Green Hydrogen Hub vision in Tuticorin
The India Maritime Week 2025, held in Mumbai from October 27 to 31, emerged as a dynamic platform for collaboration and innovation, drawing participation from global maritime leaders and stakeholders. The event underscored India’s growing prominence in shaping the future of the maritime industry through sustainability, technology, and green transformation.
Transforming VOC Port into a Green Hydrogen Hub
In a landmark development, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port), Tuticorin, signed 29 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across diverse sectors, including port modernization, shipbuilding, IT, sustainability, and other port-related services. The combined investment value of these MoUs stands at an impressive ₹90,936 crore, marking one of the largest investment commitments ever made toward a port-led green transition in India.
Among these, three major MoUs in the green energy sector alone total more than ₹45,400 crore, solidifying VOC Port’s vision of evolving into a Green Hydrogen Hub for southern India.
Key Green Energy Agreements
Green Infra Renewable Energy Farms Pvt. Ltd. (GIREFPL), a Sembcorp group company, signed an MoU to establish a common storage facility for green ammonia and hydrogen derivatives worth ₹25,400 crore.
ACME Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. inked a deal to set up a 1,200 MTPD Green Ammonia Project, valued at ₹15,000 crore.
CGS Energy Pvt. Ltd. joined the green alliance with a 300 TPD Green Ammonia production facility, investing ₹5,000 crore.
These strategic partnerships mark a pivotal leap forward in India’s decarbonization journey, positioning VOC Port as a cornerstone of clean energy and sustainable maritime development.
Recognition and Academic Endorsement
Adding academic and institutional validation to VOC Port’s sustainability journey, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta released a case study titled “Sustainable Transformation and Decarbonization in India’s Maritime Sector – VOC Port’s Journey to a Green Port.” The case study showcases the port’s pioneering steps in adopting green technologies and its roadmap for sustainable operations.
The study was released by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, in the presence of Shri Vijay Kumar, IAS, Secretary (MoPSW); Shri S. Venkatesapathy, Joint Secretary (MoPSW); Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson, VOC Port Authority; and Prof. Ramya Venkateswaran, IIM Calcutta.
Green Visionary Award for VOC Port
On the concluding day of the India Maritime Week, VOC Port’s commitment to environmental excellence was recognized with the ‘Green Visionary’ Award. The award was presented by Shri Sarbananda Sonowal to Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson, and Shri Rajesh Soundararajan, IAS, in the presence of Shri Shantanu Thakur, Hon’ble Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
