V O C Port Authority Launches Direct Port Entry Facility for Export Containers

Streamlining Export Operations at Thoothukudi

The V O Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority, a key state-owned port operator in Tamil Nadu, has announced a significant enhancement to its logistics infrastructure with the introduction of the Direct Port Entry (DPE) facility. This new service enables e-sealed, factory-stuffed export cargo containers to bypass traditional clearance stages and directly enter the port terminal, marking a major step forward in reducing logistics bottlenecks and expediting cargo movement.

Efficient, Cost-Effective Export Handling

The DPE facility is now operational 24/7, offering exporters a faster and more cost-effective alternative by eliminating the need for clearance at nearby Container Freight Stations (CFSs). With DPE, exporters can expect reduced waiting times, lower handling costs, and an overall improvement in the efficiency of the export supply chain.

In conjunction with the Direct Port Delivery (DPD) initiative for imports, the DPE system aims to reduce cargo dwell time, enhance port productivity, and promote ease of doing business at VOC Port.

Affordable Tariff Structure for Exporters

To utilize the DPE service, the VOC Port Authority has introduced a competitive pricing model. As per the trade notice issued on April 10:

  • ₹135 + GST will be charged per twenty-foot container

  • ₹162 + GST will be charged for containers larger than twenty feet

These charges will be collected from Custom brokers availing the facility.

VOC Port on a Growth Trajectory

In FY25, VOC Port handled an impressive 7,95,222 TEUs, reflecting a 6.4% increase compared to the 7,47,363 TEUs managed in the previous fiscal year. The port operates two container terminals: one managed by Dakshin Bharat Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd and the other by Tuticorin International Container Terminal Pvt Ltd. Together, these terminals have a combined handling capacity of 1.35 million TEUs, making VOC Port one of the leading container hubs in South India.

A Forward-Thinking Move for Trade Enhancement

With the launch of the DPE facility, VOC Port Authority reinforces its commitment to modernizing port operations and supporting India's goal of boosting exports through efficient infrastructure. This initiative is expected to significantly benefit exporters, logistics service providers, and shipping lines operating through the port, further enhancing Thoothukudi’s reputation as a vital gateway for international trade.
