Mormugao Port becomes India’s first accredited green port

Mormugao Port has created history by becoming India’s first accredited Green Port under the Green Port Certification Programme. The prestigious recognition was announced by Shri N. Vinodkumar, Chairman of the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), during a roadshow ahead of India Maritime Week 2025, which will be held in Mumbai from October 27–31 with participation from over 100 countries.

A Recognition of Sustainability Leadership

The certification was awarded by the Centre of Excellence on ESG and Circularity, Mumbai, making Mormugao Port a pioneer in sustainable port management. This achievement also places the port on the global map as it is among the three Indian ports selected by the World Bank under its project for greening of ports.

“This recognition is a milestone for MPA. Last year, we became the first port in the country to incentivise commercial vessels based on Environment Ship Index (ESI) scores. This certification further reinforces our commitment to sustainable and responsible port operations,” said Vinodkumar.

Driving Green Energy Initiatives

To reduce emissions and its overall carbon footprint, MPA has already operationalised a 3MW solar power plant and plans to expand the capacity to 5MW in partnership with the Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA). Such initiatives underline the port’s proactive approach to clean energy adoption and sustainability.

Roadmap Towards a Smart Port

Beyond green initiatives, Mormugao Port is also working towards becoming a smart port. According to Vinodkumar, a roadmap is in place to introduce 5G technology in major ports, enabling faster and more advanced communication. A strong 5G backbone will help modernise port operations, enhance efficiency, and improve safety.

Indigenous Technological Advancements

Highlighting India’s progress in self-reliance, the MPA Chairman also stressed the adoption of indigenous vessel traffic management systems. Currently, seven of the country’s twelve major ports are already operating with Indian-developed software, reducing reliance on foreign systems and boosting national capability.

A Step Towards Global Maritime Goals

This recognition cements Mormugao Port’s position as a frontrunner in India’s sustainable maritime transformation. It aligns with global efforts to decarbonise shipping and port operations while setting a benchmark for other Indian ports to follow.

By becoming the nation’s first accredited Green Port, Mormugao has not only elevated India’s standing in the maritime sector but also demonstrated that growth and sustainability can go hand in hand.
