Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT) at Indira Dock, a landmark development set to redefine India’s maritime and tourism landscape. Developed under the Cruise Bharat Mission, this state-of-the-art facility marks a significant step toward positioning India as a leading global cruise destination.
Largest Cruise Terminal in India
Built at a cost of ₹556 crore, the MICT spans 4.15 lakh sq. ft., making it the largest cruise terminal in the country. The terminal can berth five ships simultaneously and is designed to accommodate up to one million passengers annually, reflecting India’s ambition to become a global cruise hub.
World-Class Facilities and Design
The terminal’s interiors combine modern architecture with Mumbai’s rich maritime heritage. Highlights include a wavy ceiling, rose-gold finishes, minimalist design, heritage décor, selfie points, maritime plaques, and cultural displays, ensuring an enhanced and memorable travel experience.
For seamless passenger movement, MICT features 72 immigration and check-in counters spread over 2.07 lakh sq. ft., along with parking for more than 300 vehicles, catering to both domestic and international travelers.
First Voyage and Future Prospects
The first vessel, Cordelia Empress, is scheduled to dock on September 22, before sailing to Goa and Lakshadweep. Officials have described MICT as a flagship project of the Cruise Bharat Mission, aimed at promoting ocean, river, and island cruises across India.
The government has set ambitious targets to increase cruise passenger numbers significantly by 2029, with the new terminal equipped to handle nearly 200 cruise ships annually, including vessels carrying up to 5,000 passengers. This inauguration not only strengthens India’s maritime infrastructure but also paves the way for a booming cruise tourism industry.
MICT stands as a symbol of India’s vision to blend modernity with heritage, offering travelers a seamless journey while highlighting the country’s rich maritime legacy.
