Instagram is testing a feature to control reels feed

Instagram is once again refining the way users experience content on its platform. The company has started testing a new feature that gives users greater control over what appears in their Reels feed, marking a significant step toward more personalized content discovery.

According to Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, the feature allows users to add or remove topics based on their interests effectively shaping how their algorithm functions. This means users can now decide which trends, creators, or subjects they want to see more (or less) of, giving them a customized Reels experience. Mosseri also announced that this update will soon extend to the Explore section, further enhancing user control over suggested content.

The topics currently being tested reflect popular cultural interests such as Bad Bunny, vintage Patek watches, Japanese artisan menswear, and stand-up comics. By tailoring their feed, users can curate an experience that aligns more closely with their personal preferences rather than relying solely on Instagram’s automated recommendations.

For now, the new feature is available only to a select group of users in the U.S., but Instagram plans to expand access in the coming months. Interestingly, parent company Meta is also exploring ways to bring similar controls to Threads, its text-based social platform, signaling a broader push for transparency and personalization across its ecosystem.

In addition to this, Instagram recently introduced features that let users see what Reels their friends are liking and reposting, making it easier to discover engaging content through social connections.

With these updates, Instagram continues to balance algorithmic discovery with user-driven customization aiming to make scrolling through Reels a more intentional and relevant experience for everyone.
