Konecranes Secures Landmark Order for 30 Battery-Powered RTGs in India
In a major boost to India’s sustainable port development, Konecranes has announced a landmark order for 30 battery-powered Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes for a new greenfield container terminal in India. This move signifies a major step toward greener port operations and advanced terminal efficiency, setting new benchmarks in the nation’s maritime infrastructure.
Green Milestone for Port Technology
The order was officially booked in Q3 2025, and the delivery of these advanced cranes is expected by Q1 2027. The terminal will rely heavily on these Konecranes RTGs, which will serve as the backbone of yard operations and play a central role in achieving the port’s sustainability goals. Each RTG will be equipped with Konecranes’ E-Hybrid technology, designed for fully electric operation with zero tailpipe emissions.
Revolutionary Battery and Busbar Power System
A key highlight of the project is the busbar-and-battery setup, ensuring that the RTGs are powered entirely by onboard battery packs. This configuration enables seamless operation even during grid outages, enhancing operational resilience. The batteries charge dynamically through the busbar during operation, ensuring continuous performance with minimal energy loss.
Reduced Energy Demand and Enhanced Efficiency
Konecranes’ E-Hybrid system is a game changer it significantly lowers peak power demand to just 60 kilowatts (kW) per RTG, compared to the 400 kW typically required by traditional electric models. This not only eases the strain on local power grids but also reduces capital expenditure on substations and supporting infrastructure.
A New Reference for Green Terminal Design
Commenting on the development, Shyam Pathak, Sales Director, Konecranes Port Solutions, said:
“This greenfield project shows how far Konecranes’ E-Hybrid technology has come. We’re demonstrating to the wider container handling industry that large terminals can now launch with fully electric operations, even if their grid supply is unreliable. This is a new reference point for terminal design and investment in Ecolifting.”
Konecranes’ Ecolifting Vision
This initiative aligns perfectly with Konecranes’ Ecolifting vision a global mission to expand its “handprint”, meaning the positive environmental impact achieved through its products and services. By helping customers minimize their carbon footprint, Konecranes continues to lead the transformation toward sustainable lifting solutions. From optimized diesel systems to hybrid and fully electrified fleets, the company is reshaping the future of port technology.
Innovation Beyond RTGs
Recently, Konecranes also unveiled its Noell Hydrogen Fuel Cell Straddle Carrier in Panama City, marking another leap toward cleaner port equipment solutions. Together, these innovations highlight Konecranes’ ongoing commitment to developing next-generation equipment that supports global decarbonization efforts across the maritime sector.
With this order, India’s port sector takes another giant step toward a cleaner, more efficient, and future-ready infrastructure powered by innovation and sustainability.
