‘Her life’s in danger’: Rape survivor’s father appeals to government to shift daughter to Bhubaneswar

‘Her life’s in danger’: Rape survivor’s father appeals to government to shift daughter to Bhubaneswar

A heartbreaking plea has emerged from the father of a 23-year-old MBBS student who was allegedly gangraped in West Bengal’s Durgapur. The survivor, currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Durgapur, faces not just physical trauma but also a perceived threat to her safety. Her father has urgently appealed to the Odisha government to move her to Bhubaneswar for continued treatment and protection.

Father’s Emotional Plea to the Odisha Government
The survivor’s father, speaking from Durgapur, voiced deep fear for his daughter’s life. “I appeal to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to help shift my daughter to Bhubaneswar. I fear that her life may be in danger,” he said over the phone. The family, residents of Jaleswar in Odisha’s Balasore district, rushed to Durgapur as soon as they were informed of the horrific incident.

Incident Details and Ongoing Investigation
According to officials, the Dalit student was allegedly raped by three men on Friday evening when she had gone out of the campus with a male student around 8 pm. The father revealed that the assailants dragged her into a jungle area where the crime was committed. The male companion, he claimed, fled the scene and did not alert anyone about the attack.

West Bengal Police have arrested three suspects within 36 hours of the incident. Additional District Magistrate of Balasore, Hemant Singh, stated, “We are satisfied with the prompt action and hope that justice will be done to the victim.”

Safety Concerns and Distrust
Expressing grave concern, the father said that his family felt unsafe in West Bengal. “They will kill my daughter. Her health condition has improved, but there is danger to her life. I cannot trust them,” he said, adding that he was hiding in Durgapur while his wife, a diabetic, stayed beside their daughter in the hospital.

Odisha Government’s Response
A team of officials from Balasore, led by District Social Welfare Officer Jyotsna Mohanty, visited the survivor in Durgapur following Chief Minister Majhi’s personal call to the family. Mohanty confirmed, “The survivor’s condition is gradually improving. We have assured the family that the Odisha government stands firmly with them. Necessary coordination is being maintained with the West Bengal Police.”

Political Reactions and Public Outrage
The case has sparked political outrage, with BJP MP Pratap Sarangi slamming the Mamata Banerjee-led government for what he termed a “complete breakdown of law and order.” Meanwhile, the survivor’s father dismissed reports suggesting negligence on the part of his daughter, calling them “false attempts to suppress the incident.”

Demand for Justice and Safety
As the survivor continues her recovery, her father’s appeal underscores the urgent need for safety and justice. The case has once again brought to light the recurring concerns over women’s safety and accountability in handling crimes of sexual violence. The family’s plea for relocation to Bhubaneswar is not only a call for medical care but also a desperate attempt to find security in the midst of fear and uncertainty.
