V.O. Chidambaranar Port achieves record efficiency with lowest container turnaround time of 19.92 hours
The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), Tuticorin, has set a new benchmark in operational excellence by achieving the lowest container turnaround time of just 19.92 hours. This remarkable milestone highlights the port’s unwavering commitment to enhancing productivity, adopting modern technologies, and ensuring smooth logistics operations.
A Testament to Growing Efficiency
During the current fiscal period, VOCPA handled an impressive 4,78,144 TEUs, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 8.48%. This growth reaffirms the port’s pivotal role as a key gateway for containerized trade in southern India, enabling faster, more efficient cargo movement across domestic and international routes.
Technology and Teamwork Driving Performance
The improved performance stems from a series of targeted measures, including enhanced berth productivity exceeding 30 moves per hour, congestion-free gate operations, and the integration of digital initiatives that streamline cargo handling. These collective efforts have drastically reduced delays and improved the overall turnaround time for vessels.
A senior port official noted that this achievement represents the port’s dedication to maintaining global service standards while fostering regional trade growth. The success is attributed to continuous infrastructure upgrades, deployment of advanced cargo-handling equipment, and close coordination among shipping lines, terminal operators, and customs authorities.
Strengthening India’s Maritime Vision
With this milestone, V.O. Chidambaranar Port further cements its reputation as one of India’s most efficient container-handling ports. It plays a critical role in advancing the goals of Maritime India Vision 2030, which aims to enhance the country’s port infrastructure, improve logistics competitiveness, and support sustainable maritime growth.
By achieving this record efficiency, VOCPA not only boosts its operational standing but also contributes to India’s broader mission of becoming a global leader in maritime trade and logistics excellence.
