Paradip Port Cleared to Build ₹797-Crore Green Hydrogen Jetty
India’s push towards clean energy infrastructure has received a major boost as Paradip Port Authority secures approval to develop a dedicated green hydrogen jetty at an estimated cost of ₹797.17 crore. The project is set to transform Paradip into a strategic hub for green energy cargo along India’s east coast.
Approved by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the development marks a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure to support the growing green hydrogen ecosystem.
Project Overview and Investment
The green hydrogen jetty will be implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, ensuring efficient private participation along with strategic public oversight.
Key highlights of the project include:
Total project cost: ₹797.17 crore
Port capital support: ₹159.43 crore (20% of project cost)
Completion timeline: 24 months
Handling capacity: 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA)
The jetty is designed to handle green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other liquid cargo, providing flexibility in operations and ensuring optimal utilization in the initial years.
Advanced Infrastructure for Green Energy Cargo
The project will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure tailored specifically for green energy derivatives. Planned facilities include:
A dedicated berth with a dredged depth of approximately 14.3 metres
Specialised liquid cargo berthing arrangements for large vessels
Advanced storage systems
Pipeline networks for safe transfer
Modern cargo-handling equipment
Enhanced safety systems for handling hazardous and sensitive cargo
This integrated setup will enable Paradip Port to efficiently manage large-scale green energy shipments while adhering to global safety and environmental standards.
Strengthening the National Green Hydrogen Mission
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized that the facility will anchor Paradip’s role in India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The jetty is expected to:
Strengthen export logistics for green hydrogen and its derivatives
Connect Odisha’s emerging green hydrogen production clusters to global markets
Enhance India’s competitiveness in the global clean energy supply chain
Diversify Paradip’s cargo portfolio with liquid cargo handling
By handling other liquid cargo in its early operational years, the port aims to maximise asset utilisation and create a balanced cargo mix while green hydrogen volumes scale up.
Paradip’s Strategic Position on the East Coast
Located in Odisha, Paradip Port plays a critical role in India’s eastern maritime corridor. With this green hydrogen jetty, the port is set to become a key gateway for clean energy exports, supporting India’s decarbonisation goals and sustainable maritime development.
The ₹797-crore investment not only strengthens Paradip’s infrastructure but also signals India’s commitment to building a future-ready, green maritime ecosystem. As the global demand for clean fuels rises, Paradip Port is poised to emerge as a vital node in the international green hydrogen value chain.
