New Mangalore Port Authority surpasses last year’s cargo handling, crosses 46 MMT in FY26

The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has continued its impressive growth trajectory in the current financial year, achieving a significant milestone in cargo handling. The port has already surpassed last year’s total cargo volume, highlighting its rising importance in India’s maritime trade and logistics network.

Cargo Handling Crosses 46 Million Metric Tonnes

As of March 4, 2026, NMPA handled 46.09 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo, exceeding the 46.01 MMT recorded during the entire FY 2024–25 period. This achievement demonstrates the port’s consistent operational improvements and its growing efficiency in managing cargo movement.

Port officials attribute this strong performance to improved coordination with port users, streamlined operational practices, and sustained efforts by various stakeholders involved in port activities. These developments have allowed the port to maintain a steady flow of cargo throughout the year despite evolving global trade dynamics.

Steady Growth in Container Traffic

Alongside bulk cargo performance, NMPA has also recorded a notable rise in container traffic. The port handled 179,594 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) during the current financial year so far. This represents a 4.88% increase compared with 171,234 TEUs handled during the corresponding period last year.

The growth in container volumes indicates increasing trade activity through the port and reflects improved connectivity with domestic and international shipping routes.

Strengthening India’s Maritime Trade

Officials noted that the port’s performance reflects its broader strategic focus on enhancing logistics efficiency, expanding maritime trade, and supporting India’s economic growth. As trade volumes continue to rise, ports like NMPA play a crucial role in facilitating smoother cargo movement and strengthening supply chains.

The port’s consistent growth also highlights the effectiveness of ongoing initiatives aimed at modernizing port operations and improving services for shipping lines, exporters, and importers.

Infrastructure Improvements Driving Growth

Continuous upgrades in infrastructure, better cargo-handling systems, and enhanced customer services have contributed significantly to the port’s improved performance. These developments are helping NMPA position itself as a competitive and reliable maritime hub.

With sustained investments and operational improvements, the New Mangalore Port Authority is steadily strengthening its role as a key gateway for cargo movement on India’s west coast.

Outlook for the Future

As global trade patterns evolve and India’s export-import volumes grow, NMPA is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting the country’s logistics ecosystem. The port’s ability to surpass its previous cargo-handling record even before the financial year concludes demonstrates strong momentum and promising prospects for the years ahead.

With continued focus on efficiency, infrastructure development, and customer-centric operations, the New Mangalore Port Authority is well positioned to further enhance its contribution to India’s maritime and economic growth.
