Cuddalore port will be developed by Mahathi Cuddalore Port and Maritime Pvt Ltd.

In a major move toward enhancing maritime infrastructure in Tamil Nadu, the Cuddalore port is all set for redevelopment under the stewardship of Mahathi Cuddalore Port and Maritime Pvt Ltd, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed by Hyderabad-based Mahathi Infra Services Pvt. Ltd. (MISPL). The port’s revitalization marks a significant step in bolstering the coastal trade and logistics network of the region.
MoU Signed with Tamil Nadu Maritime Board
The official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin. This agreement between the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board (TNMB) and the SPV paves the way for the private sector to take the helm in operating the Cuddalore minor port. This public-private partnership model will drive efficiency and growth through modern infrastructure and strategic investment.
A Strategic Location Reimagined
Cuddalore port, located at the confluence of the Uppanar and Paravanar rivers on the Bay of Bengal, is an intermediate anchorage harbor. Due to recurring silting issues, the port was non-operational for some time. However, a comprehensive redevelopment project costing ₹160 crore has breathed new life into the facility. Key upgrades include:
Dredging of the approach channel to a depth of approximately 9 meters
Construction of Wharves 1 and 2, totaling 240 meters in length
Extension of North and South breakwaters
These developments are expected to significantly improve port access and increase capacity for handling cargo.
Long-Term Investment and Operations Plan
Under the 40-year concession agreement, Mahathi Cuddalore Port and Maritime Pvt Ltd will initially invest close to ₹200 crore over the next two years for infrastructure development. The company will focus primarily on chemical-based products and has committed to handling a minimum of 3 lakh tonnes per year. Additionally, the firm will pay the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board $32 per tonne, further contributing to state revenues.
Future of Cuddalore Port
According to TN Venkatesh, Vice Chairman & CEO of TNMB, this development marks a new chapter for Cuddalore port. The project is poised to enhance the region’s industrial potential and attract further investments in chemical and allied sectors. With better port infrastructure and increased cargo handling capacity, the Cuddalore port is expected to become a vital node in Tamil Nadu’s maritime economy.
