Mongla Port posts record growth in container handling

Mongla Port, Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport, has achieved remarkable growth in container handling, marking a new milestone in the country’s maritime trade. The port’s performance in the first two months of the current fiscal year (FY 2024–25) reflects the nation’s robust economic momentum and increasing global trade connections.

Strong Start to FY 2024–25

According to the Public Relations and Traffic Department of the Mongla Port Authority, the port handled an impressive 21,456 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in FY 2024–25. In just the months of July and August alone, container handling stood at 6,769 TEUs, underscoring the port’s steady growth and operational efficiency.

Driving Factors Behind the Growth

The surge in container handling is largely attributed to a sharp rise in import volumes, backed by Bangladesh’s expanding economy and industrial activity. A business-friendly environment, along with enhanced port facilities, has further boosted confidence among both importers and exporters.

Ongoing Capacity-Enhancement Projects

To sustain this growth trajectory, Mongla Port Authority has launched several capacity-building initiatives aimed at streamlining cargo handling, reducing turnaround time, and improving overall service delivery. These projects are expected to reinforce the port’s role as a critical gateway for Bangladesh’s international trade.

Significance for Bangladesh’s Economy

As container handling capacity improves, Mongla Port is poised to become an even stronger contributor to Bangladesh’s economic development. Its rising throughput not only reduces dependency on other regional ports but also strengthens the country’s position as a growing hub in South Asia’s maritime sector.
