CP Radhakrishnan to be sworn in as 15th Vice President of India today

New Delhi, September 12, 2025 – India will witness the swearing-in of its 15th Vice President today, as CP Radhakrishnan takes oath of office at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The ceremony, scheduled for 10 AM, will be administered by President Droupadi Murmu.

A Decisive Victory

Radhakrishnan, the 67-year-old NDA nominee, secured a commanding win in the vice-presidential elections held earlier this week. He bagged 452 votes, comfortably defeating joint opposition INDIA bloc nominee and former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. The margin of 152 votes reflected the ruling alliance’s strong numerical edge and also hinted at cross-voting in his favour.

Circumstances Leading to the Election

The election was necessitated by the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, who stepped down citing health reasons. Radhakrishnan’s name was announced as the NDA’s pick shortly afterward, with his victory considered a foregone conclusion given the coalition’s strength. On paper, the BJP-led NDA had 427 MPs, bolstered by the YSRCP’s 11 MPs and support from smaller parties, ensuring he crossed the halfway mark of 377 votes with ease.

From Governor to Vice President

Ahead of his swearing-in, Radhakrishnan stepped down as the Governor of Maharashtra on Thursday. In the interim, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat has been entrusted with the additional charge of Maharashtra by President Murmu, until a new appointment is made.

A Political Journey Rooted in Ideology

Born in Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan has been deeply rooted in the RSS since childhood. He began his political journey with the Jana Sangh and later became a seasoned member of the BJP, where he served in various capacities over the decades. His rise to the office of Vice President marks a significant moment, not just for the ruling alliance but also for his personal political career spanning several decades.

Looking Ahead

As the new Vice President, Radhakrishnan will preside over the Rajya Sabha, bringing his experience and political acumen to the role. His tenure comes at a critical time when India’s parliamentary democracy faces challenges that demand balance, dialogue, and cooperation across party lines.

With his oath-taking today, India turns a new page in its constitutional history, as CP Radhakrishnan officially assumes office as the 15th Vice President of the Republic of India.
