Valenciaport processed 6.5M tonnes of cargo in August

Valenciaport, one of Europe’s busiest maritime gateways, continues to demonstrate its resilience and strategic importance in global trade. According to the latest data from the Port Authority of Valencia’s Statistical Office, the port recorded over 6.5 million tonnes of cargo in August 2025, marking a 2.5 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
Steady Cargo Growth Despite Annual Dip
Between January and August 2025, the port system managed nearly 54 million tonnes of cargo, showing a slight 0.56 per cent year-on-year decline. However, looking at the broader 12-month period, total traffic exceeded 80 million tonnes, reflecting a 0.47 per cent rise. These figures highlight Valenciaport’s ability to adapt to shifting global trade flows while maintaining long-term stability.
Container Traffic on the Rise
Container throughput was particularly strong in August, reaching 493,455 TEUs, up by a remarkable 8.05 per cent compared to August 2024. From January to August, container volumes totaled 3.8 million TEUs, an increase of 4.75 per cent. On a year-on-year basis, Valenciaport processed 5.6 million TEUs, registering a healthy 7.82 per cent growth.
Vehicle Traffic: A Mixed Picture
Vehicle handling showed mixed performance. In August, the Sagunto and Valencia terminals managed 31,276 vehicles, a 12.28 per cent increase compared to the previous year. However, cumulative figures from January to August stood at 325,088 vehicles, which is still 13.97 per cent lower than in 2024, indicating continued challenges in this segment.
Strong International Trade Ties
China remained Valenciaport’s top trading partner in 2025, with 550,983 containers (+18.81 per cent) and more than 5.8 million tonnes of cargo (+12.46 per cent). The United States followed in container trade with 263,192 TEUs (+6.02 per cent) and just over 4 million tonnes (+10.21 per cent). Algeria saw an impressive surge, becoming the third-largest container partner with 212,581 TEUs (+42.76 per cent). In terms of cargo weight, Italy surpassed the US, handling more than 4.6 million tonnes (+1.30 per cent).
Advancing Security with European Support
Beyond cargo performance, Valenciaport has also been enhancing operational safety. The port recently advanced a European-funded security project that strengthened monitoring and protection systems at the ports of Valencia and Sagunto, ensuring safer and more efficient maritime trade.
Outlook
With sustained container growth, strengthening trade ties with global partners, and continued investment in security and infrastructure, Valenciaport reaffirms its role as a critical hub in international shipping. While some segments like vehicle traffic still face headwinds, the overall cargo performance indicates resilience and adaptability in a dynamic global market.
