World’s largest container ship MSC IRINA docks at Vizhinjam Port

Vizhinjam International Seaport made headlines on June 9, 2025, as it welcomed the world’s largest container ship, MSC IRINA, marking a monumental moment in India's maritime history. This grand docking signifies not only the vessel’s maiden voyage to a South Asian port but also the emergence of Vizhinjam as a powerhouse in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).

A Giant of the Seas

The MSC IRINA boasts a record-breaking capacity of 24,346 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), surpassing its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by 150 TEUs. With an extraordinary length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, this container giant is nearly four times longer than a FIFA-standard football field. Engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, the vessel demonstrates an unprecedented level of container management and efficiency.

A Strategic Berthing for South Asia

Sailing under the Liberian flag, the vessel will remain berthed at Vizhinjam Port until Tuesday. This landmark arrival underlines Vizhinjam's readiness to handle the world’s largest shipping traffic. The port was recently dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, reinforcing its status as a globally competitive seaport.

Sustainable Shipping Excellence

In an era increasingly focused on sustainability, MSC IRINA is not just about size it’s also about environmental responsibility. The vessel incorporates advanced energy-saving technologies that help reduce carbon emissions by up to 4%, making it a progressive force in green shipping.

Vizhinjam’s Rising Prominence

This isn't the first major docking at Vizhinjam. Icon-class ships like MSC Türkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini have also anchored here recently, further establishing the port’s reputation as a vital node in international maritime trade. Since beginning trial operations in July 2024 and launching full commercial operations in December, Vizhinjam has successfully berthed 349 ships, handling 7.33 lakh containers a remarkable feat for a port in its infancy.

Conclusion

The arrival of MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam is more than just a logistical achievement it is a testament to India's growing role in global maritime logistics. As the world watches this milestone, Vizhinjam port positions itself as a future-ready, sustainable, and strategic gateway for international trade.
