Steady Growth in Monthly Cargo Handling
VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port recorded a strong performance in October 2025, handling 3.94 million tonnes of cargo and 75,110 TEUs. This marks a year-on-year increase of 10.94% in cargo volume and 20.83% in container traffic, compared to 3.55 million tonnes and 62,158 TEUs handled in October last year. The consistent upward trajectory reflects the port’s rising importance as a strategic trade hub on India’s east coast.
Strong Performance in April–October FY 2025–26
During the April–October period of FY 2025–26, VOC Port processed 25.23 million tonnes of cargo and 5,03,204 TEUs. These figures represent a 2.71% rise in overall cargo throughput and an 8.44% increase in container handling compared with the 24.56 million tonnes and 4,64,060 TEUs registered during the same period in FY 2024–25. The port’s improving performance over multiple months indicates stable demand and enhanced operational capacity.
Efficiency Gains Through Faster Vessel Turnaround
Operational efficiency at the port has also shown notable improvement. A total of 1,064 vessels were handled up to October 2025, compared to 1,004 ships during the same period last year. VOC Port successfully reduced the Average Turnaround Time (TRT) for container vessels from 20.16 hours to just 19.20 hours, showcasing better productivity, quicker vessel servicing, and smoother cargo movement.
Growth Across Diverse Cargo Categories
VOC Port’s cargo diversification strategy continues to deliver results, with significant growth recorded across multiple commodity segments:
• Petroleum products increased by 11.16%
• Edible oil rose by 8.57%
• Fertiliser grew by 34.18%
• Fertiliser raw materials increased by 8.32%
• Rock phosphate jumped by 9.85%
• Salt surged by an impressive 53%
• Construction materials recorded exceptional growth of 177.22%
This broad-based expansion highlights the port’s capacity to efficiently manage a wide variety of cargo, strengthening its role in supporting industrial, agricultural, and infrastructure supply chains.
