VOC Port explores green fuel push with MNRE; positions itself as green methanol hub
In a significant stride towards India’s clean energy future, V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority is gearing up to take the lead in the country’s transition to green maritime solutions. The port’s Chairman, Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, recently met Shri Abhay Bakre, Mission Director for Green Hydrogen at the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), to deliberate on strategies for strengthening India’s green fuel ecosystem.
Paving the way for sustainable shipping
During the high-level discussion, Shri Purohit emphasized VOC Port’s strategic potential to become a green methanol bunkering hub, an initiative aimed at enabling cleaner and more sustainable shipping operations. With the global maritime sector under increasing pressure to decarbonize, VOC Port’s vision aligns with India’s broader objective of promoting alternative, eco-friendly fuels.
Strategic location and green vision
Backed by its upcoming green methanol bunkering project and proximity to key international sea routes, VOC Port is uniquely positioned to serve as a central point for green methanol supply and refueling. This initiative not only reinforces India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in maritime logistics but also positions VOC Port as a pioneer in sustainable port operations across South Asia.
Showcasing innovation at India Maritime Week 2025
VOC Port is set to showcase its green technology initiatives at the upcoming India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, under the theme “Uniting Oceans, One Maritime Vision.” The port will feature live demonstrations and innovations in clean fuels, highlighting its readiness to lead the green transition in shipping.
As the maritime industry embraces sustainability, VOC Port’s proactive approach and collaboration with MNRE mark a pivotal moment in India’s green fuel revolution paving the way for a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient maritime future.
