Vizhinjam port sets new record with 16.95m draft vessel

Vizhinjam International Port has once again proven its world-class capabilities by setting a new benchmark in India’s maritime sector. The port successfully handled MSC Virginia, a container vessel with a draft of 16.95 metres the deepest ever at Vizhinjam and the second-largest ship to call at any Indian port.

A Record-Breaking Milestone

The MSC Virginia had earlier arrived from Mundra with a 16-metre draft. After loading nearly 5,000 TEUs of cargo, the vessel departed for Spain with its draft increased to 16.95 metres. This achievement not only breaks Vizhinjam’s own previous record of handling a 16.8-metre draft vessel but also highlights its growing stature as a global transshipment hub.

A Symbolic Onam Gift

Coinciding with the Onam festival, this milestone has been celebrated as a symbolic gift to Kerala. It reflects not just operational excellence but also the growing importance of Vizhinjam in India’s maritime development story.

Consistent Performance with Large Vessels

So far, Vizhinjam has successfully managed 17 vessels with drafts exceeding 16.5 metres, showcasing consistent efficiency and reliability in accommodating some of the world’s largest container ships. This positions the port as a preferred choice for global shipping lines looking for deep-water handling facilities.

One of Vizhinjam’s biggest strengths is its natural draft depth of 18–20 metres, which makes it one of India’s premier deep-water transshipment hubs. This natural advantage, combined with its modern infrastructure, places Vizhinjam at the forefront of the country’s efforts to become a central player in international maritime trade.
