Introduction

Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, arrived at Tuticorin Airport for his official visit to V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port). The visit marked a significant milestone in the port’s journey toward modernization and heritage preservation with the inauguration of the VOC Maritime Heritage Museum.

Grand Welcome at VOC Port

The Union Minister was received by Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairperson of VOC Port, along with senior officials of the Port Authority. A vibrant traditional cultural performance was organized as a mark of honour, reflecting the rich cultural spirit of Tamil Nadu.

A ceremonial Guard of Honour was also accorded prior to the commencement of the official programme, symbolizing the importance of the occasion and the Minister’s visit to this strategically significant port.

Inauguration of VOC Maritime Heritage Museum

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of the VOC Maritime Heritage Museum. The museum documents India’s rich maritime legacy and showcases the vital role played by the Tuticorin region in coastal trade and shipping.

The inauguration underscores the Government’s continued commitment to port modernization, infrastructure augmentation, and maritime-led economic development. The museum stands as a tribute to India’s historic seafaring traditions while aligning with the nation’s forward-looking maritime vision.

Honouring Literary and Cultural Icons

The event also witnessed the felicitation of Shri Venkatachalapathy, noted historian and writer, and Smt. Ilampiraai Manimaaran, distinguished Tamil scholar and orator. Their contributions to literature, history, and cultural scholarship were recognized during the ceremony, adding a scholarly and cultural dimension to the occasion.

Strengthening Maritime Heritage and Tourism

Addressing the gathering, the Union Minister emphasized the importance of preserving India’s maritime heritage and promoting regional tourism through initiatives like the VOC Maritime Heritage Museum.
