Study says coffee may offer heart-healthy benefits, protects against irregular heartbeats

Another new reason to keep sipping your daily cup of coffee? A new study suggests that coffee may actually offer heart-friendly benefits especially for people with irregular heartbeats.

Coffee has long been more than just a morning ritual; it’s the loyal companion that helps you push through groggy mornings and sluggish evenings alike. But beyond its energizing effects, recent research shows that your daily brew may also be doing wonders for your heart.

A study published on November 9, 2025, in the JAMA Network revealed that coffee consumption is safe for people diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart beats irregularly and often rapidly. Interestingly, the research found that coffee not only poses no risk but may significantly reduce the recurrence of irregular heartbeat episodes.

Understanding the Study
The study involved about 200 older adults from the US, Canada, and Australia, all of whom were coffee drinkers with atrial fibrillation. Participants were divided into two groups   one continued drinking at least one cup of coffee daily, while the other completely stopped for six months. Their heart rhythms were closely monitored using electrocardiograms and wearable heart monitors.

The results were striking:

  • Around 47% of the coffee drinkers had another episode of irregular heartbeat, meaning 53% remained stable.

  • In contrast, 64% of those who stopped drinking coffee experienced another episode.

In summary, the findings showed a 39% lower chance of recurrence among those who continued drinking coffee.

Why Does Coffee Help?
Researchers believe coffee’s natural compounds particularly those with anti-inflammatory properties help stabilize the heartbeat. Another theory is that coffee may slightly increase adrenaline levels, improving circulation and supporting better heart function overall.

What Does This Mean for Coffee Lovers?
If you enjoy coffee in moderate amounts, this study offers comforting news: your favorite beverage may actually lower your risk of irregular heartbeats if you have atrial fibrillation. For years, coffee was thought to be harmful to heart rhythm, but these findings suggest the opposite.

So, the next time you reach for your cup of coffee, know that it’s not just fueling your day it might also be giving your heart a healthy boost.
