Steelpaint returns to India with Chennai cranes coatings trial

Germany’s Steelpaint is making a strong comeback to the Indian market after more than 16 years, with a major field trial at the Port of Chennai. The company has delivered its Stelcatec corrosion-resistant coating system for application on a range of RTGs and ship-to-shore cranes, marking a significant step in its global expansion strategy.
Partnership with Kaptel Overseas
The trial, set to begin this month, is being conducted in collaboration with Kaptel Overseas, Steelpaint’s newly established regional partner based in New Delhi. Kaptel has been serving the Indian market since 1993 and represents several global equipment suppliers. Together, the two companies aim to showcase the benefits of advanced protective coatings in India’s rapidly growing port sector.
Proven Technology for Harsh Marine Environments
Steelpaint’s Stelcatec LPR primer and Stelcatec LTC topcoat have already been proven in major European ports such as Hamburg, Wilhelmshaven, and Cuxhaven, where equipment must endure challenging marine conditions. The system is engineered to be easy to apply, while delivering outstanding resistance to corrosion. For terminal operators, this means extended asset life, longer maintenance cycles, and reduced downtime.
“After many years away from India, we are very pleased to be back with a trusted local partner,” said Frank Müller, Director of Steelpaint. “Our Stelcatec system has delivered outstanding results in Europe’s busiest seaports, and we are confident it can help operators in Chennai and across the sub-Continent improve efficiency and cut maintenance costs.”
Meeting India’s Port Sector Needs
India’s expanding port sector faces tough conditions, including high salinity, heat, and humidity, which accelerate steel asset degradation. With the government’s ambitious $1 trillion infrastructure roadmap and projects like the Vizhinjam International Seaport, there is increasing demand for durable, sustainable technologies.
Nishanth Maliyekkal, CEO of Kaptel, emphasized the importance of this development:
“India is investing heavily in its maritime sector, and Steelpaint’s coatings bring the durability and performance that operators need. The Indian Ports Bill, 2025 further highlights modernization and sustainability, areas where Stelcatec technology offers clear value.”
Focus on Efficiency and Sustainability
While India is a price-sensitive market, Steelpaint is confident that its coatings will be seen as an investment rather than an expense. Longer maintenance intervals mean fewer disruptions, improved safety, and better asset availability all of which contribute to operational efficiency.
Steelpaint’s re-entry also aligns with broader sustainability goals, as coatings that extend equipment life help reduce waste, resource use, and costs across the port and shipping value chain.
Presence at INMEX India 2025
Coinciding with its Chennai trial, Steelpaint will participate in INMEX India 2025 in Mumbai (10–12 September), making its first appearance at the maritime exhibition in nearly two decades. The company plans to engage with port authorities, terminal operators, ship managers, and shipyards to demonstrate how protective coatings can enhance performance while supporting sustainability.
“Being present at INMEX India is important for us,” Müller added. “It underlines Steelpaint’s commitment to the Indian market and our readiness to collaborate closely with industry stakeholders.”
Looking Ahead
If successful, the Chennai trial could pave the way for further applications across India’s container and bulk ports, as well as in ship repair and newbuild projects. With India’s maritime sector set for rapid growth, Steelpaint’s return comes at a pivotal time, promising enhanced durability, cost savings, and efficiency for operators nationwide.
