Starlink India pricing revealed? Monthly plan cost shows on website, then retracted; company says it was a ‘glitch’

Starlink, the satellite-based internet service owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, grabbed significant attention on Monday after its India website briefly displayed what appeared to be official pricing for its residential internet service. However, the company later clarified that the information was merely “test data” made visible due to a configuration glitch.

Pricing Flash   Then Disappearance
Mid-day on Monday, Starlink’s India webpage showed the “Residential plan” priced at ₹8,600 per month, along with a one-time hardware kit cost of ₹34,000. The same listing also mentioned a 30-day trial period for customers before fully committing to the service. But by evening, all pricing elements disappeared from the site.

Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, addressed the confusion on X, stating: “There was a config glitch that briefly made dummy test data visible, but those numbers do not reflect what the cost of Starlink service will be in India. The glitch was quickly fixed.”

Business Plan Still Under Wraps
Notably, even the erroneous “test data” did not include information about the Business plan  a segment expected to play a major role in industrial, enterprise and remote-site connectivity. Starlink has not yet disclosed any official details about the commercial plan for India.

Hiring Signals Big Expansion Plans
Despite the confusion over pricing, Starlink’s recent activity indicates rapid expansion. In late October, SpaceX posted four India-based job openings on LinkedIn for positions in Bengaluru, including a Payments Manager, Accounting Manager, Senior Treasury Analyst and Tax Manager. These roles are part of a larger effort to grow international operations as the company prepares for broader rollout.

Who Stands to Benefit?
Starlink’s entry is poised to transform connectivity in India’s underserved regions. Students, small enterprises, rural households and local administrations especially in areas where traditional broadband remains scarce are expected to be the biggest beneficiaries. However, the commercial rollout still hinges on regulatory clearances from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Musk Speaks on Starlink’s Future
In an interview with Nikhil Kamath, Elon Musk recently spoke about emerging technologies and Starlink’s progress. Highlighting the role of robotics in daily life, he noted that helper robots could become mainstream soon. He also emphasized Starlink’s success in delivering low-cost, reliable global internet, now accessible across more than 150 countries.

Starlink Officially Enters India
A major milestone came in November when Maharashtra became the first Indian state to partner with Starlink. The collaboration marks Starlink’s first formal association with an Indian state government and signals a significant step in India’s broader digital infrastructure push.

As India awaits official pricing and rollout timelines, Starlink’s growing involvement both technologically and institutionally suggests that satellite internet may soon play a pivotal role in bridging the country’s digital divide.
