Shreyas Iyer faces BCCI's wrath, entire Punjab Kings team punished but Hardik Pandya cops the maximum blow; fines galore

Shreyas Iyer faces BCCI's wrath, entire Punjab Kings team punished but Hardik Pandya cops the maximum blow; fines galore

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken stern disciplinary action against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) following breaches of the IPL 2025 Code of Conduct during Qualifier 2, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Captains Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya found themselves at the center of the storm as both teams were penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate.

Repeat Offenders: PBKS and Shreyas Iyer Slapped with Fines

For the second time this season, the Punjab Kings were found guilty of not maintaining the minimum over-rate requirement. Consequently, skipper Shreyas Iyer has been handed a hefty fine of INR 24 lakh. This penalty reflects the BCCI's tough stance on repeat offences under its over-rate regulations.

An official BCCI release stated:
“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs.”

The rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, weren’t spared either. Each team member has been fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, depending on which is lower.

Hardik Pandya Cops the Maximum Blow in IPL 2025

While Iyer’s fine was steep, it was Hardik Pandya who received the harshest punishment of the season. The Mumbai Indians were found guilty of committing their third over-rate offence this year. As a result, Pandya has been fined INR 30 lakh   the maximum amount any captain has paid in IPL 2025.

The BCCI’s release confirmed:
“As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 30 lakh.”

The rest of the Mumbai Indians’ squad, including their Impact Player, were each fined either INR 12 lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever is lesser   a significant blow to the team’s finances and morale.

Qualifier 2 Recap: PBKS March to the Final

Despite the penalties, PBKS had reason to celebrate on the field. In an exciting chase, they successfully hunted down a daunting target of 204, winning the Qualifier 2 match by five wickets with six balls to spare. The victory ensures a place in the IPL 2025 final, where Shreyas Iyer’s men will lock horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Tuesday, June 3, at the same venue in Ahmedabad.

Strict Message Sent by the BCCI

This wave of fines serves as a clear reminder that the BCCI is taking over-rate offences seriously. Captains are now under added pressure not just to lead their teams to victory but to ensure the game is played within stipulated timeframes. With the final just around the corner, all eyes will be on whether PBKS and RCB can keep their play sharp   and their over-rates sharper.
