Security heightened at Paradip Port following Delhi explosion
In the wake of the recent bomb blast in New Delhi on Monday evening, security measures have been significantly strengthened at Paradip Port, one of India’s major maritime hubs in Odisha. Authorities have elevated the port’s security to Level 2, indicating a state of heightened vigilance. Intensive patrolling operations are underway both within the port premises and across its surrounding areas.
According to Smurti Ranjan Kar, Additional Superintendent of Police, Jagatsinghpur, “All vehicles passing through the port area are being checked.” The enhanced security protocols aim to prevent any possible threats from affecting this crucial gateway of trade and logistics in eastern India.
Marine Security and Fishermen Checks
Security forces and marine police officers have intensified inspections of fishing vessels and trawlers. The fisheries department has issued biometric fingerprint identity cards (BFIC) to marine fishermen, ensuring that only registered and verified individuals are permitted to venture into the sea. Fishermen without these identity cards are restricted from sailing, while awareness programs have been conducted in coastal villages to alert locals about potential threats and the importance of reporting suspicious activity.
Group Fishing and Reporting Protocols
Authorities have advised traditional fishermen to engage in group fishing for safety and coordination. They are also required to carry their original boat registration certificates and biometric ID cards at all times. Any unidentified or suspicious boat spotted at sea must be immediately reported to the concerned authorities. These measures aim to strengthen the integration of the fishing community as an active participant in national coastal security.
Joint Coastal Patrol for Strengthened Vigilance
The Joint Coastal Patrol (JCP) exercise has been activated to enhance surveillance, detection, and identification of potential threats. This operation leverages the marine fishing community as the “eyes and ears” of national security agencies, ensuring a continuous communication channel between security forces and local fishermen.
Odisha’s Expansive Coastal Infrastructure
Odisha’s coastline spans 484 kilometers, featuring major ports such as Paradip, Dhamra, and Gopalpur, along with several jetties and coastal industries. The state’s 3.6 lakh fishermen operate more than 20,000 fishing boats, making it vital for authorities to maintain robust coastal security mechanisms.
A senior official of the Indian Coast Guard (Paradip Headquarters) confirmed that strict patrolling and coastal monitoring have been initiated across the entire stretch of the Odisha coast. Coordination between the coast guard, police, and local authorities continues to be reinforced to safeguard India’s eastern maritime boundary.
The swift response at Paradip Port demonstrates India’s readiness to protect its maritime zones from any emerging threats and reinforces the nation’s commitment to maritime safety and national security.
