Strengthening Inland Waterways in Assam

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on Thursday inaugurated key Inland Water Transport (IWT) infrastructure projects in Assam, marking a significant step toward strengthening river-based trade, logistics, passenger mobility, and tourism across the Northeast.

The projects have been developed along the mighty Brahmaputra River and are aimed at enhancing cargo handling capacity, improving last-mile connectivity, and integrating the region more effectively with national and international trade corridors.

Transforming the Northeast’s Economic Landscape

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, the Minister emphasized that modern IWT infrastructure will transform the economic landscape of the Northeast. By reducing logistics costs and promoting a sustainable, eco-friendly mode of transport, waterways are set to become a game-changer for regional trade.

He highlighted that river transport offers immense potential for bulk cargo movement, especially construction materials, agricultural produce, and other commodities that require cost-effective and large-scale transportation solutions.

Upgraded Terminals and Cargo Facilities

The newly inaugurated facilities include upgraded terminals, improved passenger jetties, and advanced cargo-handling systems. These developments are designed to support both domestic and cross-border trade, strengthening connectivity with neighboring countries.

The projects are aligned with the Centre’s broader national multimodal logistics strategy, aiming to integrate waterways seamlessly with road, rail, and port infrastructure.

The Brahmaputra, designated as National Waterway-2, plays a crucial role in linking Assam with neighboring states and international markets such as Bangladesh and Bhutan.

With enhanced infrastructure, officials expect a significant rise in cargo throughput and passenger traffic in the coming years. Improved navigational aids and terminal facilities will ensure smoother and more reliable river operations throughout the year.

Boost to River Tourism and Employment

The Minister also underscored the government’s commitment to promoting river tourism in Assam. Modern terminals and enhanced navigational infrastructure are expected to boost cruise tourism, generate employment opportunities, and support local businesses across the riverine belt.

River cruises on the Brahmaputra have already gained popularity, and with improved facilities, Assam is poised to emerge as a leading destination for inland water tourism.

Sustainable Growth and Act East Policy

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways continues to invest in dredging operations, night navigation facilities, and vessel modernization to ensure year-round navigability of the river.

With these newly launched projects, the government aims to position Assam as a major inland waterways hub. The initiative will accelerate economic growth in the Northeast while reinforcing India’s Act East policy through enhanced river connectivity and stronger trade integration with Southeast Asian markets.
