Sagarmala projects in Tamil Nadu secure ₹403 crore boost

Tamil Nadu is witnessing significant strides in maritime infrastructure, thanks to the Central Government’s Sagarmala Scheme, which continues to play a pivotal role in transforming India’s coastal economy. With 18 projects sanctioned under the Sagarmala initiative in the state, Tamil Nadu has secured a substantial financial boost of ₹403 crore (Rs 4,030 million), strengthening its port-led development agenda.
What is Sagarmala?
Launched by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Sagarmala Scheme is a flagship Central Sector initiative that aims to harness India's 7,500 km coastline, 14,500 km of navigable waterways, and its strategic position on global maritime routes. The scheme supports states in developing port infrastructure, enhancing connectivity, setting up fish harbours and cruise terminals, promoting skill development, and uplifting coastal communities.
Progress in Tamil Nadu
Out of a total sanctioned outlay of ₹909 crore (Rs 9,090 million), nearly ₹403 crore (Rs 4,030 million) has already been disbursed to Tamil Nadu for the execution of 18 critical projects under Sagarmala.

Fishing Harbours:
Poompuhar – ₹148 crore
Mookaiyur – ₹113.9 crore
Kuthakal – ₹74 crore
Chinnamuttom – ₹74 crore
National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts
Located at IIT Chennai
Project Cost: ₹77.03 crore
Modern Elevated Steel Bridge at Kanyakumari
Aimed at improving tourist access
Project Cost: ₹31.05 crore
