Rinku Singh leaves India camp, returns home due to family emergency
India batter Rinku Singh has left the national camp and returned home following a sudden family emergency. The development comes at a crucial stage of the tournament, with India preparing for an important Super 8 clash.
Father Hospitalised in Greater Noida
According to sources, Rinku’s father, Khanchand Singh, is in serious condition and has been admitted to a local hospital in Greater Noida. He is currently on ventilator support.
Rinku had travelled with the Indian team to Chennai on Monday, February 23, a day after India’s Super 8 clash. However, he left Chennai early on Tuesday morning to be with his family after receiving the distressing news. He was also unavailable for practice on Tuesday evening following the development.
Unlikely to Feature Against Zimbabwe
India are set to face Zimbabwe national cricket team on February 26 in Chennai. With Rinku returning home, he is unlikely to be available for the match.
The timing of his departure is significant, as India are in a must-win situation. After suffering a defeat to South Africa national cricket team in their first Super 8 match, the team is under pressure to bounce back strongly.
Tournament Scenario: India Under Pressure
South Africa ended India’s impressive 12-match unbeaten streak in the ongoing T20 World Cup with a 76-run win in Ahmedabad. The defeat not only halted India’s momentum but also dented their Net Run Rate significantly.
As defending champions, India now face the risk of an early exit from the tournament. To keep their hopes of reaching the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals alive, India must win both their remaining matches by big margins.
Zimbabwe: A Tough Opponent
Zimbabwe, led by Sikandar Raza, have proven they are no pushovers. They defeated former champions Australia and Sri Lanka in the group stage to qualify for the Super 8.
Although Zimbabwe lost to the West Indies in their first Super 8 match, they remain a competitive and unpredictable side. India will need to be at their best to secure a convincing victory.
Possible Replacement: Axar Patel
In case Rinku is unavailable for selection, India can directly slot in Axar Patel. The Indian vice-captain did not play against South Africa a decision that drew criticism from experts and fans alike.
His inclusion could add balance to the side, especially considering the pressure situation India currently find themselves in.
A Personal Moment Beyond the Game
While cricket remains important, family always comes first. Rinku Singh’s decision to return home underlines the human side of professional sport. The Indian team and fans across the country will undoubtedly be hoping for his father’s speedy recovery.
At this critical juncture in the tournament, India must regroup, refocus, and deliver strong performances both for their campaign and for their teammate during this difficult time.
