Punjab: Sukhbir meets Majithia in jail, slams AAP for vendetta politics

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday met senior party leader Bikram Singh Majithia in Nabha jail, marking his first visit since Majithia’s arrest in June this year. He was accompanied by Majithia’s wife and MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia, and his sister, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal. The meeting comes days after Baba Gurinder Singh Dhillon, the spiritual head of Radha Soami Satsang Beas, also met Majithia.
Sukhbir Badal’s Sharp Attack on AAP
Speaking to reporters outside the jail, Sukhbir Singh Badal accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of indulging in vendetta politics by targeting political opponents. He alleged that the police were deliberately creating hurdles in allowing family and legal visits to Majithia.
“Majithia was jailed in a false case. It is shocking that while convicted AAP leaders and police officers, accused of fake encounters, are allowed unrestricted meetings in jail, hurdles were being created for Majithia, who is only an undertrial. Today, after three months, Majithia’s family members have finally been allowed to meet him freely. Earlier, his wife was allowed to meet him only once and his counsel twice,” Badal said.
He further added that both the Shiromani Akali Dal and Majithia would continue to stand firm against what he described as the government’s “tyranny.”
Background of the Case
Bikram Singh Majithia was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 in connection with a disproportionate assets case. On August 22, the Vigilance Bureau filed a massive 40,000-page chargesheet against him in a Mohali court.
The FIR against Majithia is linked to an ongoing investigation by a Punjab Police special investigation team into the 2021 drug case. He had previously been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act on the basis of a 2018 report submitted by the state’s anti-drug special task force.
Majithia spent over five months in Patiala jail before being released in August 2022 after the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted him bail. His latest arrest has once again sparked political tensions in Punjab.
Political Repercussions
The confrontation has reignited the rivalry between SAD and AAP in Punjab politics. While SAD maintains that the charges are politically motivated, AAP has consistently defended its stance by emphasizing its anti-corruption and anti-drug agenda.
With Sukhbir Badal openly accusing the AAP government of double standards and vendetta politics, the case is likely to remain a flashpoint in Punjab’s political landscape in the coming months.
