PSA Mumbai Phase 2 inauguration makes it India’s largest container terminal

India achieved a significant milestone in its maritime infrastructure journey with the inauguration of Phase 2 at Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT), operated by PSA International at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva). With this expansion, PSA Mumbai has officially become the country’s largest standalone container terminal, offering a massive annual handling capacity of 4.8 million TEUs.

Doubling Capacity for Global Trade

The Phase 2 development has doubled BMCT’s earlier capacity of 2.4 million TEUs. The terminal now boasts a 2,000-metre quay length, equipped with 24 advanced quay cranes and 72 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs). Adding to its multimodal strength, the facility is directly connected to the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), enabling seamless rail connectivity to major industrial hubs across India.

A Ceremony of International Significance

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior dignitaries from the Government of Maharashtra and Singapore, underscoring the terminal’s role in strengthening bilateral cooperation in infrastructure. PSA International, a Singapore-based global ports operator, has invested over US$2.3 billion in India, highlighting the scale and importance of this project.

Transforming India’s Maritime Landscape

According to officials, the commissioning of Phase 2 will be a game-changer for India’s trade and logistics ecosystem. The project will:

  • Improve cargo-handling efficiency and reduce vessel turnaround time at India’s busiest port.

  • Enhance India’s trade competitiveness and connectivity to global markets.

  • Generate new employment opportunities, driving economic growth in Maharashtra.

  • Strengthen the India–Singapore partnership in the maritime and infrastructure sectors.

Ready for the Future of Trade

BMCT’s Phase 2 facilities were completed in June 2025, and with today’s inauguration, the terminal is expected to reshape regional trade dynamics. Industry leaders have hailed the expansion as a milestone that places PSA Mumbai at the forefront of India’s maritime growth, supported by state-of-the-art equipment, scalable infrastructure, and robust multimodal logistics.

A New Era for Indian Exports

With its cutting-edge infrastructure and strategic connectivity, PSA Mumbai is set to play a pivotal role in positioning India as a stronger player in global supply chains. The expansion marks not just the growth of a terminal, but the beginning of a new era in Indian exports, trade competitiveness, and maritime excellence.
