‘Politics from home’: DMK leader's jibe at Vijay's meeting with families of Karur victims

‘Politics from home’: DMK leader's jibe at Vijay's meeting with families of Karur victims

In a fresh political controversy, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief Vijay has come under fire from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for the way he met with families of victims from the Karur stampede tragedy. The incident, which claimed 41 lives and left over 50 injured, occurred during a rally held by Vijay in Karur on September 27 this year.

The Mamallapuram Meeting

On Monday, Vijay held a closed-door meeting at a resort in Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) with the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic stampede. Early in the morning, several TVK leaders began arriving at the venue to coordinate the gathering. The meeting was reportedly aimed at extending condolences and support to the affected families.

DMK’s Sharp Criticism

However, the move drew strong criticism from DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan, who accused Vijay of lacking sensitivity and courtesy. Elangovan said that rather than visiting the victims’ homes, Vijay had chosen to meet them in a hotel setting  a move he described as “politics from home.”

“The affected people are meeting Vijay today because they are coming to his place. Vijay has no courtesy to go to their houses and inquire about them and pacify them. Vijay’s politics is different. He wants to do politics from home and does not want to go to the people,” said Elangovan.

The Karur Stampede: A Tragic Reminder

The Karur stampede remains one of the most devastating political rally tragedies in recent Tamil Nadu history. Among the 41 victims, there were 18 women, 15 men, five girls, and five boys. Most of the victims  34  were from the Karur district, while others hailed from Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Salem districts.

The incident occurred at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode Highway, when a massive crowd gathered for the rally led by Vijay. The chaos that followed led to the tragic loss of lives and raised questions about crowd management and political accountability.

Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe

In the wake of mounting public outrage, the Supreme Court of India has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. A bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and NV Anjaria also appointed a three-member monitoring committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, to ensure that the probe remains independent and impartial.

The Road Ahead for Vijay and TVK

Vijay, a popular actor-turned-politician, launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam earlier this year with promises of reform and change. However, the Karur tragedy and the criticism surrounding his recent meeting have cast a shadow on his political journey.

While his supporters argue that Vijay’s intention was to provide comfort in a controlled and respectful environment, critics like Elangovan view it as a symbol of detachment from grassroots politics.

As the CBI investigation unfolds and political narratives intensify, the focus remains on justice for the victims and accountability for the tragedy that shook Tamil Nadu.
