PM Modi Welcomed With Bhojpuri 'Chautaal' In Trinidad And Tobago

Port of Spain:
In a historic and culturally rich moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm and traditional welcome upon his arrival in Trinidad and Tobago with the rhythmic echoes of Bhojpuri Chautaal. This marked his first official visit to the Caribbean nation as Prime Minister and the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1999.
The welcome ceremony at Piarco International Airport was grand and heartfelt, with Prime Minister Modi being greeted by Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, 38 ministers, and four Members of Parliament. He was also honored with a ceremonial Guard of Honour, reflecting the significance of his visit.
Sharing a video of the traditional Chautaal performance on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, PM Modi captioned it:
"Bhojpuri Chautaal echoes in Trinidad & Tobago!"
This resonant tribute not only highlighted the deep-rooted cultural ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago but also celebrated the shared heritage cherished by the Indian diaspora in the region.
During his visit, PM Modi engaged with the vibrant Indian community in the country, commending their remarkable contributions to Trinidad and Tobago’s development. He acknowledged how the descendants of Indian migrants have excelled in various fields while staying strongly connected to their Indian roots.
“Many people from India made their way to Trinidad & Tobago years ago. Over the years, they distinguished themselves in several fields and are enriching Trinidad & Tobago's development journey. At the same time, they have retained a connection with India and are also passionate about Indian culture. Grateful to the local Indian community for an unforgettable welcome in Port of Spain,” PM Modi expressed on X.
An especially proud moment came when he met Shankar Ramjattan, Nicholas Maraj, and Vince Mahato, the winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz from Trinidad and Tobago. The Prime Minister highlighted how this initiative has strengthened global connections with India:
“Met youngsters Shankar Ramjattan, Nicholas Maraj and Vince Mahato, who are winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz in Trinidad & Tobago. This Quiz has generated widespread participation across the world and deepened the connect of our community with India.”
PM Modi’s visit is a testament to the enduring and evolving ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago. Through shared culture, people-to-people connection, and mutual respect, both nations continue to celebrate a bond that transcends borders.
