PM Modi to dedicate Dhordo as India’s newest solar village

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to dedicate Dhordo, a remote yet globally renowned village in Gujarat’s Kutch, as India’s newest “Solar Village” on Saturday, September 20, 2025. The event will take place during the ‘Samudra Se Samriddhi’ programme in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, marking a significant milestone in India’s clean energy journey.

A Solar-Powered Transformation

Dhordo, internationally recognized as the ‘Best Tourism Village’ by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), is scripting a new chapter in sustainability. Through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, every residential electricity connection in Dhordo has been solarised, ensuring that homes now generate their own clean energy.

A total of 81 houses in the village have been equipped with rooftop solar panels, creating a combined installed capacity of 177 kilowatts. This system is projected to generate 2.95 lakh units of electricity annually, offering substantial economic relief to residents by significantly reducing their electricity bills.

Economic and Community Impact

Sarpanch Miyan Hussain highlighted the transformative impact of this initiative:
"Although Dhordo is a remote village, it has seen remarkable development under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. With solar rooftops now installed in every home, electricity bills will be greatly reduced, providing significant relief to the villagers. Supported by government subsidies and bank loans, the villagers have incurred minimal expenses, and this initiative has brought immense joy to our community."

A Model for Gujarat and Beyond

With this development, Dhordo becomes the fourth solar-powered village in Gujarat, following Modhera in Mehsana, Sukhi in Kheda, and Masali in Banaskantha. This initiative reflects India’s commitment to sustainability, renewable energy adoption, and community empowerment, especially in remote regions.

By turning Dhordo into a solar-powered village, India is not just promoting clean energy but also demonstrating how green initiatives can improve rural livelihoods, reduce household expenses, and contribute to the country’s larger climate goals.

Dhordo’s solar journey stands as a shining example of how technology and government schemes can come together to transform lives while fostering environmental stewardship. As the nation witnesses this dedication by PM Modi, Dhordo sets a precedent for other villages to embrace solar power, ensuring a brighter and greener future for all.
