Mormugao port to restart container operations after seven years

After a seven-year hiatus, Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) in Goa is gearing up to relaunch its container operations, signaling a major revival for the state’s maritime and logistics sector. The port, which last handled containerized cargo in 2018, is set to officially resume services in late November 2025, ushering in a new era of growth for Goa’s trade and export ecosystem.

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has been appointed as the feeder vessel operator for the renewed service. The SCI Mumbai will make its maiden call at Mormugao Port on November 20, marking the formal reopening of container traffic through Goa’s primary seaport after years of dormancy. This step not only revives operations but also repositions Mormugao as a key player in India’s west coast maritime network.

Exporters and trade bodies have warmly welcomed the move, emphasizing that the return of container operations will help reduce logistics costs, shorten transit times, and lessen dependence on road transport to ports in neighboring states like Maharashtra and Karnataka. With reduced transport expenses and faster shipment cycles, local industries are likely to see significant operational benefits.

Industry experts predict that the restart could transform Mormugao into a strategic logistics hub, capable of supporting Goa’s growing industrial base and boosting international trade efficiency. The renewed activity is expected to attract new shipping lines and cargo operators, enhancing connectivity, trade competitiveness, and overall economic growth in the region.

The resumption of container handling marks a pivotal milestone for Mormugao Port   one that aligns with India’s broader push to modernize port infrastructure, expand coastal shipping, and optimize supply chain logistics. As Goa reconnects with global trade lanes, Mormugao’s revival stands as a strong symbol of India’s maritime resurgence.
