More than half of online written content is AI-generated, new study says
Artificial Intelligence has reached a new milestone in its digital takeover more than half of the written content on the Internet is now AI-generated. According to a new report from Graphite, a company specializing in search engine optimization (SEO), 52% of all online written material has been produced by some form of AI technology.
The study analyzed over 65,000 URLs between 2020 and 2025, revealing how AI-generated writing surged in popularity, especially after the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. The number of AI-written articles rose sharply through 2023 and 2024, even briefly surpassing human-created content between late 2024 and early 2025. Although it has since leveled off, AI-generated material still makes up just over half of all written content found online today.
Interestingly, despite this massive surge, search engines are doing a good job of filtering out low-quality or “AI slop” from top search results. The report notes that only 14% of content ranking on Google was AI-generated, suggesting that algorithms still prioritize authentic, human-created work. Moreover, when AI tools like ChatGPT generate their own responses, they still rely on human-written sources 82% of the time, according to Graphite.
These findings indicate that while AI has become a dominant player in digital content creation, fears of a complete “AI takeover” may be premature. The study suggests a more balanced digital ecosystem one where AI helps produce a majority of online content, but human creativity, insight, and authenticity still lead the way in what truly engages readers.
As AI tools continue to evolve, their collaboration with human writers may define the next phase of online communication blending efficiency with originality, and automation with the human touch.
