Kollam port development gains Union govt’s support

In a significant boost to Kerala's maritime infrastructure, the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has pledged full support for the comprehensive development of Kollam Port. This announcement was made by N. K. Premachandran, Member of Parliament, who has been at the forefront of advocating for the port's advancement.

According to Premachandran, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, emphasized the importance of taking necessary steps to upgrade Kollam Port into a modern facility capable of handling passenger ships, cargo vessels, and luxury cruise liners. The minister also proposed initiating a new shipping service to Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep, further enhancing the region’s connectivity and tourism potential.

Centre’s Financial Commitment

The central government has already allocated funds for a multi-purpose development project at Kollam Port. The development project, which enables docking facilities for various categories of ships, has been completed with central financial assistance—a strong testament to the Union Government’s commitment to Kerala’s port sector.

Need for State Initiative

However, since Kollam Port is classified as a non-major port, the responsibility for its development lies with the state government. The Union Minister highlighted that for Kollam to realize its full potential, the Kerala State Maritime Board and the state government must submit a detailed proposal aligning with the guidelines of the Sagarmala Project.

The Sagarmala initiative, a flagship programme of the central government, aims to promote port-led development and provides financial assistance for infrastructure and connectivity improvements. By being included in this project, Kollam Port could access significant resources for comprehensive development.

Call for Action from the State

MP Premachandran has urged state authorities to act swiftly. He stressed the importance of submitting a comprehensive development proposal to the Centre under the Sagarmala scheme to enable:

  • Launch of passenger, cargo, and luxury ship services

  • Infrastructure development to accommodate larger vessels

  • Enhanced connectivity with Lakshadweep through Minicoy Island

In his push for rapid action, Premachandran has written to the State Port Minister, the Port Department Secretary, and the Chairman of the State Maritime Board, requesting the immediate formulation and submission of the necessary proposal.

A Vision for Kollam’s Maritime Future

With the Union Government extending full cooperation and resources, the onus now lies on the Kerala State Government to seize this opportunity. The development of Kollam Port is not just about boosting regional trade and connectivity—it’s a step towards transforming Kerala’s coastal economy, enhancing tourism, and providing new livelihood opportunities.

If the proposal is submitted promptly and approved under the Sagarmala Project, Kollam could soon emerge as a key maritime hub on the southwestern coast of India.
