India upset Oman, claim third in CAFA Nations Cup

India’s football team scripted a memorable triumph in Hisor, Tajikistan, defeating Oman 3-2 on penalties after a hard-fought 1-1 draw in regulation time, to secure third place in the CAFA Nations Cup. The result marked a historic breakthrough, as India claimed their first win over the Gulf side in 31 years.

Fighting Spirit Under Khalid Jamil

This third-place finish is a major boost for coach Khalid Jamil in his debut assignment. Questions had been raised about India’s lack of attacking firepower, but the squad displayed grit and resilience, rallying from a goal down to push the contest into penalties. Despite missing some key players, the 133rd-ranked side held their ground against Oman, ranked 79th in the world, in a performance that showcased determination and team unity.

How the Match Unfolded

Oman struck first in the 55th minute when Jameel Al Yahmadi tapped in from an Abdullah Fawaz flick. Earlier, both sides had squandered chances Anwar Ali’s firm header was saved by goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini, while Nasser Al Rawahi missed an easy opportunity for Oman. India too had a golden chance before half-time, but Irfan Yadwad failed to convert from Lallianzuala Chhangte’s cut-back.

Jamil’s tactical substitutions in the 78th minute proved decisive. Midfielders Udanta Singh and Suresh Singh added energy, and within minutes, Udanta found the equaliser. Rahul Bheke’s long throw was flicked on by Danish Farooq, and Udanta’s diving header bounced into the net in the 80th minute. After a VAR check, the goal stood, bringing India level at 1-1.

Penalty Shootout Drama

With Oman’s Ali Al Busaidi sent off in extra time, the match headed into a tense shootout. Chhangte, Bheke, and Jithin MS converted for India, while Udanta missed and Anwar Ali’s attempt was saved. For Oman, only Thani Al Rushaidi and Muhsen Al Ghassani managed to score.

India held a 2-0 advantage early in the shootout after Harib Al Saadi and Ahmed Al Kaabi missed their kicks. However, Oman clawed back as their goalkeeper denied Anwar Ali and Udanta missed. The contest came down to the final penalty, where Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, already impressive during the match, dived brilliantly to block Al Yahmadi’s attempt and seal India’s 3-2 victory.

A Creditable Finish

While the CAFA Nations Cup doesn’t carry ranking points, the victory was a morale-boosting achievement for India’s young squad. It showcased their ability to bounce back against higher-ranked opponents and provided much-needed confidence ahead of future tournaments.

In the final, Uzbekistan stunned Asian powerhouse Iran 1-0 with a last-minute strike by Khozhiakbar Alizhonov, but India’s resilient campaign ensured they returned home with a bronze and renewed hope for the future.
