India tea exports increase by 2.85%

India’s tea export industry has brewed up encouraging news this fiscal. According to official data released by the Tea Board of India, tea exports from the country witnessed a notable increase of 2.85% in the 2024–25 financial year compared to the previous fiscal year.

Slight Yet Steady Growth

In terms of quantity, India's tea exports grew from 250.73 million kilograms in 2023–24 to 257.88 million kilograms in 2024–25. This positive growth underscores the resilience of the Indian tea industry in global markets despite fluctuations in regional output.

North India Leads the Surge

A major contributor to this growth was North India, where export volumes rose by a strong 8.15%, increasing from 149.05 million kilograms to 161.20 million kilograms. This region continues to dominate the export landscape, benefiting from its high-quality Assam and Darjeeling teas that are in demand globally.

Dip in South Indian Exports

In contrast, South India witnessed a decline of 4.92%, with tea exports dropping from 101.68 million kilograms to 96.68 million kilograms. The fall in exports from this region may be attributed to production and climatic challenges, market competition, or changing demand dynamics.

Rise in Export Prices

The value per kilogram of tea exported also saw a healthy spike. The average export price rose by 12.65%, climbing from Rs 258.30 to Rs 290.97 per kilogram. This suggests stronger demand and perhaps a shift towards higher-value specialty teas in international markets.

Calendar Year Trends: January to December 2024

Looking at the broader picture, during the calendar year January to December 2024, India exported 256.17 million kilograms of tea, an impressive 10.57% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

  • North India exported 155.49 million kilograms, a 10.28% rise.

  • South India exported 100.68 million kilograms, marking a growth of 11.02%.

These trends indicate that while fiscal year figures reflect a marginal increase, the calendar year statistics reveal stronger momentum, especially for South India, suggesting a possible recovery and promising outlook for 2025.

Conclusion

India's tea export performance in 2024–25 paints a picture of resilience and potential. With North India driving volumes and export prices on the rise, the country continues to strengthen its position in the global tea market. Stakeholders across the value chain from planters and packagers to traders stand to benefit from these positive developments.

As global demand for high-quality and specialty teas grows, India's tea industry is well-positioned to tap into newer markets and reinforce its legacy as one of the world’s largest tea exporters.
