India hold off brave England and brilliant Bethell to reach T20 World Cup final

Cricket fans at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium witnessed one of the most extraordinary matches in T20 World Cup history as India national cricket team narrowly defeated the England cricket team to reach the tournament final.

In a semi-final filled with breathtaking hitting, collapsing bowling figures, and record-breaking statistics, India survived a fierce English fightback to win by just seven runs. The result sends India into the final against New Zealand national cricket team, where they will aim to secure their third T20 World Cup title.

A Record-Breaking Night of Runs and Sixes

The match will be remembered as one of the most explosive encounters in the history of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

England posted a massive 246 runs, a total they have exceeded only three times in their history. Yet, incredibly, it was still not enough to secure victory. The game produced multiple tournament records:

  • Most runs ever scored in a T20 World Cup match

  • Most sixes in a match (34)

  • India’s highest number of sixes in an innings (19)

Both teams also conceded their highest-ever T20 totals, highlighting the brutal nature of the batting-friendly conditions at Wankhede.

The match ended dramatically with Jofra Archer smashing sixes off the last three legal deliveries, reducing the margin to just seven runs.

India’s Explosive Batting Display

India set the tone early with a blistering batting performance. By the end of the powerplay they had already raced to 67 for 1, combining aggressive stroke play with fearless intent.

Several Indian batters maintained astonishing scoring rates:

  • Three players scored at more than two runs per ball

  • Another managed three runs per ball

The momentum never slowed. India finished their innings with a devastating flourish, smashing 48 runs in the final three overs, pushing their total to a daunting 253.

One of the standout performances came from Sanju Samson. Given a lifeline early in his innings when England captain Harry Brook dropped a catch, Samson capitalized brilliantly.

He went on to score 89 runs from 42 balls, dominating England’s bowlers and energizing the home crowd.

England’s Bowlers Under Siege

England’s bowling attack endured a punishing evening as Indian batters dismantled their plans.

The pace-heavy lineup struggled badly:

  • A three-man seam attack bowled 11 overs and conceded 150 runs

  • Archer eventually dismissed Tilak Varma late in the innings

  • Archer and Sam Curran recorded some of the most expensive bowling figures by England players in T20 World Cup history

For Archer, the Wankhede Stadium continues to be an unhappy hunting ground. Three of his four most expensive England performances have come at this venue.

Bethell’s Brilliant Century Keeps England Alive

Despite the huge target, England refused to surrender.

Young star Jacob Bethell produced a sensational innings that kept England’s hopes alive throughout the chase. The left-hander struck a magnificent 105 runs from just 48 balls, attacking the Indian bowling with fearless aggression.

At several stages, England mirrored India’s scoring pace almost perfectly:

  • One run ahead after the powerplay

  • Level totals after 10, 12, and 13 overs

  • Ahead again after the 15th, 16th, and 17th overs

England’s resilience reflected Brook’s earlier claim that his team is “never quite out of the game.”

Bumrah’s Crucial Over Turns the Match

Just as England looked capable of completing an incredible chase, India’s bowling hero stepped forward.

Jasprit Bumrah delivered a decisive 18th over, conceding only six runs at a critical moment. That spell effectively broke England’s momentum and shifted the match firmly in India’s favor.

Bethell was eventually run out after his heroic century, and the chase began to unravel.

Key Fielding Moments That Decided the Match

In such a close contest, fielding played a decisive role.

A stunning relay catch involving Axar Patel and Shivam Dube removed Will Jacks. Patel sprinted to his left, grabbed the ball, and tossed it to Dube before crossing the boundary rope.

Ironically, Brook’s earlier dropped catch of Samson may have been the most decisive moment of the night. As Brook himself admitted later, “catches win matches.”

India March On to the Final

In the end, India held their nerve to secure a thrilling victory in one of the most dramatic matches the tournament has seen.

While England exited the competition, their fighting spirit and Bethell’s remarkable century earned widespread praise. Few teams could chase such a gigantic target with such determination.

For India, however, the mission continues. With the final against New Zealand approaching, they now stand one victory away from lifting their third T20 World Cup trophy.
