India and Russia step up maritime cooperation ahead of Putin’s visit

India and Russia are gearing up for a significant phase of maritime collaboration as senior Russian official Nikolai Patrushev, aide to President Vladimir Putin and chairman of Russia’s Maritime Board, held high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The meeting marks an important milestone ahead of President Putin’s upcoming visit to India next month for the 23rd India–Russia Summit, which also commemorates 25 years of the Declaration on Strategic Partnership.

Expanding Strategic Engagement

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the talks focused on strengthening cooperation in core maritime domains such as connectivity, shipbuilding, skill development, and the blue economy. These areas reflect both nations’ long-term interest in enhancing maritime strength, improving logistics efficiency, and establishing future-ready collaboration in the shipping and ocean economy.

Prime Minister Modi conveyed his greetings to President Putin and reaffirmed India’s readiness to host the upcoming summit. Officials noted that Patrushev’s visit is a clear indication of accelerating momentum in India–Russia ties, particularly across the maritime and strategic sectors.

Key Priority Areas of Cooperation

The meeting outlined several areas where both countries plan to intensify efforts:

Maritime Connectivity
India and Russia are exploring ways to streamline logistics links and strengthen supply chains. Improved maritime corridors will enhance trade efficiency and support long-term economic partnerships.

Shipbuilding and MRO
Both sides discussed joint ventures in shipbuilding, focusing on developing advanced vessel construction capabilities. Opportunities in MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) were also highlighted, enabling growth in maritime infrastructure and industrial cooperation.

Blue Economy
Sustainable use of ocean resources is emerging as a shared priority. The dialogue included collaboration in marine research, ocean management practices, and environmentally responsible maritime development.

Arctic Engagement
With Russia as a key Arctic nation, the two countries examined areas for cooperation in Arctic navigation, exploration, and resource development   a domain that holds major strategic and commercial potential.

Strengthening Global and Regional Stability

India and Russia reiterated their commitment to a multipolar global order and emphasized working together to foster regional stability and global security. Maritime cooperation forms a vital part of this joint vision, supporting connectivity, economic progress, and strategic balance.

A Strong Future for Maritime Partnership

The ongoing discussions underline the depth of India–Russia relations and signal a shared intention to scale up cooperation in the maritime sector.
