Gujarat emerges as India’s Maritime Powerhouse under PM Modi’s vision: CM Bhupendra Patel at India Maritime Week 2025
Gujarat has firmly established itself as India’s maritime powerhouse, driven by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his transformative initiative, “Samudra se Samruddhi” (Prosperity through the Sea). Speaking at the inauguration of India Maritime Week 2025, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel highlighted how the state’s robust maritime ecosystem has become a national model for growth, sustainability, and innovation.
A Global Gathering of Maritime Leaders
The prestigious event, organized by the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, was inaugurated by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, and the Chief Ministers of Maharashtra, Goa, and Odisha. The conference brought together maritime leaders, innovators, and investors from over 100 countries, underscoring India’s growing maritime influence on the global stage.
Gujarat: The Maritime Gateway of the Nation
Highlighting Gujarat’s remarkable journey, CM Patel stated that over the past two decades, the state has transformed into the “Maritime Gateway of the Nation,” handling more than 40% of India’s total cargo traffic. Gujarat’s ports have become symbols of resilience and progress, powering both regional and national economies through advanced logistics and port-led industrial development.
Leadership in LNG, LPG, and Ship Recycling
Gujarat continues to lead the country in LNG and LPG handling, with Dahej Port alone managing over 80% of India’s LNG-LPG throughput. Additionally, the Alang ship recycling yard, the world’s largest, contributes a staggering 98% of India’s total ship recycling capacity, making Gujarat a global leader in sustainable maritime practices and circular economy initiatives.
Vision for Maritime Amrit Kaal 2047
Outlining the roadmap for the future, CM Patel announced Gujarat’s ambitious plan to expand the combined capacity of its major and non-major ports to 3,000 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) by 2047, aligning with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. This bold target reinforces Gujarat’s commitment to sustainable development, port modernization, and job creation on a massive scale.
Preserving Heritage While Driving Development
Mr. Patel also emphasized the ongoing development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, calling it a living embodiment of Prime Minister Modi’s philosophy, “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” (Development with Heritage). The complex aims to preserve India’s ancient maritime legacy while fostering tourism, education, and cultural awareness.
Driving Innovation and the Blue Economy
Gujarat’s focus on port modernization, coastal connectivity under the Sagarmala project, and community empowerment has set new benchmarks for India’s blue economy. The state’s integrated approach towards “chip and ship” manufacturing exemplifies the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), blending technological innovation with traditional strengths.

The inaugural session was graced by dignitaries including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Their collective presence reflected a strong national commitment toward achieving maritime excellence and driving India’s economic transformation through the seas.
