Echandia to Power India’s First Fully Electric Tug

Echandia to Power India’s First Fully Electric Tug

India’s maritime sector has taken a decisive step towards sustainability with Swedish maritime battery specialist Echandia being selected to supply the energy storage system for the country’s first fully electric harbour tug. This development marks a major milestone in India’s transition to greener and more efficient port operations.

A landmark project under Green Tug Transition Programme
The zero-emission harbour tug will operate at Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat and is being developed under the Green Tug Transition Programme led by the Government of India. The programme aims to decarbonise port activities across the country by replacing conventional diesel-powered tugs with clean, electric alternatives.

Advanced battery technology for intensive operations
Echandia will supply a 4.4 MWh advanced battery system specifically designed to handle demanding harbour operations. The system supports zero emissions, significantly reduces noise levels, and lowers overall operating costs. Engineered for a 15-year service life, the battery technology can deliver more than 30,000 charge cycles without requiring a mid-life battery replacement, making it a robust and future-ready solution.

Strong collaboration driving innovation
The project is being executed by Ripley Group as the tug operator, while Kongsberg Maritime is acting as the system integrator. Kongsberg Maritime is responsible for integrating Echandia’s battery system into the fully electric propulsion package, ensuring seamless performance and reliability.

Delivery timeline and environmental impact
Scheduled for delivery in 2026, the electric tug is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution at one of India’s busiest ports. Its deployment will demonstrate how advanced electric propulsion can support heavy-duty maritime operations without compromising efficiency or safety.

India’s long-term green maritime vision
India plans to deploy 16 electric tugs by 2027, with a longer-term vision of expanding the fleet to around 150 vessels. By 2040, the country aims to scale up to nearly 400 green harbour craft as part of a broader maritime sustainability roadmap focused on cleaner energy and reduced environmental impact.

Echandia’s growing presence in India
Echandia already has a strong and growing footprint in India, having supplied battery systems for electric ferries and water transport projects. This latest project further reinforces its role as a key technology partner in India’s shift towards cleaner, more sustainable maritime solutions.

The introduction of India’s first fully electric harbour tug not only reflects the country’s commitment to green shipping but also sets a benchmark for future port modernisation and sustainable maritime development.
