DP World, DPA and Nevomo sign MoU to explore autonomous magnetic rail freight movement

In a groundbreaking move set to transform India’s port logistics, DP World, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and Nevomo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a first-of-its-kind pilot project that will demonstrate autonomous magnetic rail-based freight movement within a live port environment.
A Visionary Collaboration for India’s Logistics Future
The MoU, signed on 15th July 2025 in Kandla, Gujarat, brings together three leaders in infrastructure and innovation to explore the implementation of Nevomo’s MagRail a proprietary technology designed for the self-propelled, electric-powered movement of cargo wagons. The project proposes the development of a 750-metre pilot track at Deendayal Port, a significant step forward in integrating next-generation logistics systems within India’s port ecosystems.
MagRail: Speed, Sustainability, and Smart Movement
MagRail, a unique innovation by Nevomo, utilizes linear motor technology to enable autonomous, rail-based freight movement on existing tracks. This approach not only increases operational capacity and reduces logistics costs but also dramatically cuts CO2 emissions, aligning perfectly with the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti vision for sustainable, integrated infrastructure.
Transforming Port-Hinterland Connectivity
As one of India's busiest multi-cargo ports, Deendayal Port Authority plays a pivotal role in enhancing India’s global trade connectivity. This initiative will optimize infrastructure use, reduce diesel dependency, and automate short-haul cargo transfers, paving the way for future-ready freight systems across the country.
Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, Chairman of DPA, remarked,
“This collaboration is a strategic advancement in port infrastructure, enhancing capacity and operational efficiency to support growing cargo demands. DP World, as trusted partner, plays a crucial role in enabling this initiative, which aligns with our commitment to strengthening India’s logistics framework and ensuring seamless trade facilitation.”
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman & CEO of DP World, emphasized,
“At DP World, we are committed to future-proofing our terminals by adopting innovative technologies that redefine how cargo moves through the supply chain. Piloting solutions like MagRail aligns with our focus on enhancing speed, efficiency, and sustainability in logistics.”
Building the Future Through Innovation and Partnership
This initiative is a result of collaborative long-term thinking. As Rizwan Soomar, CEO & MD of DP World (MENA & India Subcontinent), noted:
“The partnership between DP World and Deendayal Port Authority along with Nevomo offers a unique opportunity to reimagine the future of freight movement in India. We aim to accelerate India’s ambition to expand port-led logistics and achieve carbon neutrality through technology.”
Przemek (Ben) Paczek, CEO of Nevomo Group BV, added,
“We are proud to partner in this innovative initiative at Deendayal Port to showcase MagRail’s real-world potential in enhancing freight efficiency, capacity, and flexibility.”
A New Era of Green, Efficient Logistics
The pilot will serve as a benchmark for automating yard operations, streamlining container and bulk cargo movement, and setting new standards in port logistics efficiency. It represents a bold leap toward transforming Indian ports into engines of economic growth and global trade competitiveness powered by green energy and smart automation.
This landmark project stands as a testimony to India’s rising role in sustainable global logistics, driven by innovation, partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to infrastructure excellence.
