Congress accuses Modi government of political vendetta

The political landscape in India is once again witnessing intense confrontation as the Congress party has come down heavily on the Narendra Modi-led BJP government, accusing it of misusing central agencies to target its top leadership. The latest flashpoint stems from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filing chargesheets against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald money laundering case.

Statewide Protests Erupt in Telangana

In a show of unity and defiance, the Telangana Congress staged rallies and dharnas across all districts of the state on Wednesday. The protests aimed to condemn what they describe as “political vendetta and intimidation tactics” by the Modi government. According to Congress leaders, the chargesheets filed by the ED on Tuesday, implicating seven individuals including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, are nothing but an attempt to stifle opposition voices.

A Reaction to Rising Support?

BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, while leading a protest in the Husnabad constituency, asserted that the BJP is rattled by the increasing public support for the Congress and Rahul Gandhi’s consistent fight against the divisive agenda of the BJP. “The recent successful conduct of the AICC session in Gujarat, Modi's home turf, and Rahul Gandhi’s push for a nationwide caste census and enhanced BC reservations, have made the BJP nervous,” he said.

Prabhakar further alleged that instead of engaging in a democratic political battle, the Modi government is weaponizing central institutions like the ED, CBI, and Income Tax department. “These intimidation tactics will not deter the Gandhis, who have the unwavering support of secular and justice-loving citizens across the country,” he added.

Nehru-Gandhi Legacy Under Attack

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Mahesh Kumar Goud echoed similar sentiments. He reminded the nation of the sacrifices made by members of the Nehru-Gandhi family for India’s unity and development. “The Modi government’s attempt to tarnish their legacy will not be tolerated. People will not forgive such political manipulation,” he said.

Goud questioned the Prime Minister’s resistance to a caste-based census. “Why is PM Modi afraid of Rahul Gandhi’s demand? Instead of engaging in open dialogue, the BJP government is using ED and other agencies to silence the opposition. Since Modi came to power, over 95 cases have been filed against opposition leaders using ED, IT, and CBI. The people are observing everything and will respond accordingly,” he warned.

Symbolic Acts and Upcoming Protests

As a mark of protest, Congress workers burnt effigies of PM Modi at multiple locations across Telangana. The party has also announced a massive demonstration in front of the ED office in Hyderabad on Thursday, aiming to keep up the momentum and challenge what they perceive as an undemocratic crackdown on dissent.

With tensions rising and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on the horizon, the Congress is positioning this confrontation as a battle to save democracy and preserve constitutional values in India.
