‘As deep as the sea’: What PM Modi said on India-Maldives relations after talks with Muizzu

‘As deep as the sea’: What PM Modi said on India-Maldives relations after talks with Muizzu

In a powerful and symbolic reaffirmation of friendship, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the relationship between India and the Maldives as “older than history and as deep as the sea.” This poetic expression came during a joint press meet with Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Friday, as the two nations celebrated sixty years of diplomatic ties. The occasion was further commemorated with the release of a special postal stamp, featuring traditional watercraft from both countries, a nod to the shared maritime heritage and enduring partnership.

India’s Neighbourhood First and Vision MAHASAGAR

PM Modi reiterated that the Maldives is not only India’s closest geographical neighbour but also a central pillar of its Neighbourhood First policy and Vision MAHASAGAR   a strategic blueprint for maritime cooperation and regional stability. “India is proud to be the Maldives’ most trusted friend,” he said, underscoring New Delhi’s unwavering commitment to fostering strong regional bonds.

Boosting Defence and Strategic Cooperation

A significant highlight of PM Modi’s remarks was India’s support for strengthening the Maldives’ defence capabilities. “India will always support the Maldives to strengthen its defence capabilities,” he stated. The two leaders emphasized growing security cooperation as a reflection of deep mutual trust. Defence and security collaboration continues to be a cornerstone of India-Maldives relations, especially in the backdrop of regional maritime challenges.

USD 565 Million Line of Credit

In a major gesture of economic support, Prime Minister Modi announced a line of credit worth USD 565 million to the Maldives. This financial commitment is expected to bolster infrastructure development and expand cooperation across critical sectors, enhancing the island nation's growth prospects.

Towards a New Economic Era

On the economic front, PM Modi revealed that discussions have begun on forging a broader economic partnership, including a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries. “Talks on a free trade agreement between India and Maldives have started,” he said, signaling a new chapter in bilateral trade.

To further cement economic ties, both countries will also work towards finalising a Bilateral Investment Treaty, which is aimed at encouraging more cross-border investments and enhancing investor confidence.

Significance Amid Political Shifts

PM Modi’s two-day visit to the Maldives follows closely on the heels of his UK trip and holds special significance. President Muizzu, who assumed power in 2023, had launched an ‘India Out’ campaign during his election. However, this recent engagement marks a positive turn, showcasing a mutual willingness to bridge gaps and look ahead toward collaborative development and regional harmony.

Conclusion

With strong words, renewed commitments, and a vision rooted in shared prosperity, PM Modi’s remarks during his Maldives visit have set a positive tone for future cooperation. The India-Maldives relationship continues to evolve   rich in history, resilient in the face of challenges, and truly, “as deep as the sea.”
