Amazon layoffs to impact 800-1,000 jobs in India as AI upends work model
AI reshapes Amazon’s global workforce
Amazon, the world’s second-largest employer, is undergoing another major workforce transformation as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to redefine how work is done across its global operations. The e-commerce giant is expected to cut between 800 and 1,000 jobs in India as part of a larger global restructuring move, driven by the increasing integration of AI technologies in daily business functions.
Layoffs across key departments
According to reports, the Amazon India layoffs will span several departments, including finance, human resources, and technology, with the steepest reductions expected in teams that collaborate most extensively with global counterparts. These cuts are part of Amazon’s broader efforts to streamline operations and improve efficiency amid rising investments in AI.
Official statement from Amazon leadership
Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, addressed employees through a company-wide note, emphasizing that the changes were part of ongoing efforts to simplify organizational structures.
“The reductions we are sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets,” Galetti stated.
CEO Andy Jassy’s vision for an AI-driven future
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy had earlier indicated that the company’s workforce would shrink over the coming years as AI continues to automate processes and enhance productivity. In an email to employees in June 2025, Jassy highlighted that “Agentic AI should change the way our work is done.”
He further added, “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs. It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.”
Global impact of the layoffs
The ongoing restructuring marks Amazon’s second major round of layoffs in two years, following large-scale cuts implemented earlier. This year’s downsizing is expected to affect 14,000 employees globally, though earlier reports by Reuters had indicated a potential figure as high as 30,000. As of June 2025, Amazon’s total global workforce stood at 1.55 million, with its corporate division comprising around 350,000 employees.
Shifting investments towards AI
Despite the layoffs, Amazon remains deeply committed to the future of artificial intelligence. The company is reportedly investing over $100 billion in AI initiatives in 2025, up from $83 billion in 2024. While roles in traditional functions may be reduced, Amazon plans to increase hiring in AI-related fields, signifying a shift in talent demand within the organization.
India’s role in Amazon’s evolving strategy
India continues to be a crucial hub for Amazon’s operations, particularly in technology and back-office functions. However, as global teams adopt AI-driven tools to improve efficiency, the Indian workforce especially those in roles heavily tied to international collaboration may face the brunt of these structural adjustments.
Conclusion: A transformative but uncertain phase
Amazon’s latest layoffs highlight a broader trend across industries where AI is transforming organizational structures, reducing redundancies, and redefining human roles. While these job cuts bring short-term challenges for affected employees, they also reflect the company’s long-term vision of evolving into a more agile, AI-powered enterprise. As Amazon continues its $100 billion AI investment spree, the focus now shifts toward retraining, redeployment, and innovation-driven roles paving the way for a new era of intelligent work.
