Amazon is preparing for what could be the most significant workforce reduction in its history, with plans to lay off up to 30,000 corporate employees starting Tuesday. This massive downsizing marks a new chapter in CEO Andy Jassy’s restructuring strategy, as the tech giant shifts its focus toward AI-driven automation and operational efficiency.

A Historic Layoff Round

According to internal sources, Amazon will begin notifying affected employees via email, marking the largest wave of layoffs the company has ever undertaken. The cuts will affect nearly all business units, signaling a company-wide push to streamline operations. For context, Amazon currently employs about 350,000 white-collar workers, meaning almost 9% of its corporate workforce will be impacted.

Part of an Ongoing Restructuring Effort

This move continues a broader restructuring process initiated under Jassy’s leadership during the pandemic. Since 2022, Amazon has already eliminated more than 27,000 roles across its cloud, devices, communications, and retail divisions. The CEO has repeatedly emphasized the importance of “removing layers and flattening organisations” to enhance agility and focus on key growth areas such as generative AI and cloud computing.

While Amazon employs over 1.54 million people worldwide, including warehouse and logistics staff, this latest round of layoffs primarily targets corporate roles. Amazon’s decision comes amid a broader wave of tech layoffs driven by the rapid integration of artificial intelligence. According to Layoffs.fyi, more than 200 tech companies have collectively laid off around 98,000 workers in 2025 alone. Major players like Microsoft (15,000 jobs cut), Meta (600 jobs in its AI unit), Google (100 roles in its cloud design team), and Intel (22,000 jobs) have all undergone similar restructuring efforts to align with AI-focused strategies.
