Alabama Port Authority to deploy Konecranes RTGs at new intermodal facility

The Alabama Port Authority is taking a major step to support its rapidly expanding container trade by introducing new container-handling technology at its upcoming Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF). The authority has placed an order for two Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes, with delivery scheduled for Q4 2026. The order was confirmed in Q3 2025 and marks a strategic move to strengthen inland connectivity and optimize operations.
Rising Container Volumes at the Port of Mobile
Container throughput at the Port of Mobile has shown impressive growth in recent years. Volumes climbed from around 502,000 TEUs in 2021 to more than 563,000 TEUs in 2023. To keep pace with this growth and improve supply chain efficiency, the Montgomery ICTF is being developed as a critical hub to link maritime cargo with inland rail and road networks.
Role of the New RTGs
The two Konecranes RTGs will serve as the backbone of container-handling operations at the facility. Designed for precision and efficiency, each crane is equipped with Active Load Control to minimize sway during operations. They also come with an advanced suite of Konecranes Smart Features, including:
Auto-Steering and Auto-Positioning for seamless container handling
Auto-TOS Reporting for integration with the terminal’s operating system
Stack Collision Prevention and Auto Path Optimizing to enhance safety
Auto-Truck Guiding to accelerate container transfers
These features will ensure smooth and reliable operations, allowing faster, safer, and more cost-effective transfers between different modes of transport.
Expanding Partnership with Konecranes
This is the Alabama Port Authority’s first deployment of Konecranes RTGs, extending a trusted partnership that began in 2001 with the acquisition of a Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane. That crane remains in active service today, handling both containerized and breakbulk cargo.
A Global Trend in Konecranes Technology
The announcement comes at a time of strong global demand for Konecranes’ advanced crane technology. Recently, the Port of Cartagena placed an order for 25 RTGs and retrofitting work on 10 existing cranes to enable supervised operations, underscoring the industry-wide shift toward smarter and more automated handling solutions.
Strengthening Alabama’s Supply Chain Future
By deploying Konecranes RTGs at the Montgomery ICTF, the Alabama Port Authority is not only expanding its operational capacity but also reinforcing its role as a vital logistics gateway for the region. This investment in cutting-edge technology reflects the authority’s commitment to delivering efficiency, safety, and sustainability for shippers and supply chain stakeholders.
