Ahmedabad to host 2030 Commonwealth Games: What this means for 2036 Olympics bid
India is set to take center stage once again in the global sporting arena as Ahmedabad has been chosen to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) the centenary edition of the prestigious event. This marks a historic return, as the country last hosted the CWG in 2010 in New Delhi, an event remembered as much for its grandeur as for its challenges, including poor planning, delays in infrastructure completion, and corruption allegations.
A Defining Moment for India’s Sports Vision
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is spearheading India’s 2036 Olympics bid, hailed the decision as a “day of immense joy and pride for India.” He emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has become a “marvel of a sports destination,” backed by world-class infrastructure and a growing pool of sporting talent.
For India, hosting the 2030 CWG is not merely about organizing a mega event it’s a strategic milestone in its journey toward realizing the dream of hosting the Olympic Games in 2036.
Ahmedabad’s Rise as a Global Sports Hub
Ahmedabad, along with Gandhinagar, is expected to host the entire 2030 Games, unlike the 2036 Olympics bid which will feature multiple cities. The Rs 825 crore Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Complex and the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Enclave, which includes the Narendra Modi Stadium the largest cricket stadium in the world will be key venues for the Games.
The Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee recommended Ahmedabad after a thorough assessment of several factors, including infrastructure readiness, governance, athlete experience, and alignment with Commonwealth values. Ahmedabad’s proposal stood out for its focus on inclusivity, sustainability, and India’s deep-rooted sporting culture.
Global Recognition and National Pride
P. T. Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), lauded the development, calling it a “powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to Viksit Bharat 2047.” She added that hosting the CWG would showcase India’s world-class event management and sporting capabilities to the world.
Commonwealth Sport echoed similar sentiments, highlighting India’s rich sporting heritage and strong performance record the country secured 61 medals, including 22 gold, at the 2022 Birmingham Games, finishing fourth overall.
Overcoming Challenges and Setting New Benchmarks
Interestingly, the 2030 CWG had only two bidders Ahmedabad and Abuja (Nigeria) as the event has struggled to find hosts in recent years. The 2022 Games were initially awarded to Durban, South Africa, but were later moved to Birmingham after Durban withdrew due to financial constraints.
This background underscores the magnitude of India’s commitment to successfully delivering the 2030 Games. With lessons learned from 2010 and a renewed focus on transparency, efficiency, and legacy creation, Ahmedabad aims to set a new global benchmark in sports event management.
What It Means for the 2036 Olympics Bid
Hosting the CWG 2030 will serve as a litmus test for India’s readiness to organize the Olympic Games in 2036. Successful execution will not only enhance India’s global credibility but also demonstrate its ability to meet international standards in infrastructure, sustainability, and athlete experience.
With the Commonwealth Games General Assembly scheduled to give final approval in Glasgow on November 26, anticipation is high. If all goes as planned, Ahmedabad 2030 could become the cornerstone of India’s journey toward an even bigger dream bringing the Olympic flame to Indian soil for the first time in history.
