Batumi in pact with Aktau North Sea Terminal to develop transit transportation

In a significant move to bolster regional trade connectivity, Batumi Sea Port LLC of Georgia and Aktau North Sea Terminal LLC of Kazakhstan have signed a long-term cooperative agreement to strengthen transit transportation through the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). This agreement marks a new phase in developing East-West trade corridors and highlights the growing role of the Caucasus and Central Asia in global logistics.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
The cooperation aims to make better use of both countries’ existing port facilities, particularly leveraging Batumi’s status as Georgia’s deepest-sea port, and Aktau’s strategic position on the Caspian Sea. The partnership will focus on expanding cargo traffic between Georgia and Kazakhstan, while also contributing to the overall development of TITR an alternative corridor that bypasses Russian territory and connects China to Europe through Central Asia and the South Caucasus.
Scope of Cooperation
Key areas of the partnership include:
Development and diversification of cargo flows between the two ports
Joint marketing efforts with shipping companies to attract more transit business
Exchange of technical and operational knowledge for improved efficiency
Working visits and personnel retraining programs to upgrade logistics competencies
Improved freight handling and logistics solutions across the TITR
Market monitoring and information exchange to stay aligned with regional logistics trends
This agreement went into effect immediately upon signing and has been designed for indefinite duration, reflecting both parties’ commitment to long-term collaboration and sustainable trade growth.
Backed by Strategic Alliances
This bilateral cooperation builds on broader regional agreements signed in October 2023, when Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), and Georgian Railway (GR) signed a strategic pact with the ports of Aktau, Baku, and Batumi. That historic initiative established a Route Coordination Committee and laid the groundwork for unified transit documentation, further streamlining cargo movement across TITR.
A Look at Batumi Sea Port
Batumi Sea Port LLC, founded in 1878, is a cornerstone of Georgian maritime infrastructure. Managed by Batumi Industrial Holdings, a subsidiary of KazTransOil JSC since 2008, the port boasts oil-loading, container, dry cargo, ferry, and passenger terminals, making it a key transit hub in the Caucasus region.
A Strategic Step Forward
The partnership between Batumi and Aktau North Sea Terminal reflects the increasing importance of TITR in Eurasian logistics. It not only facilitates smoother and faster East-West trade but also strengthens economic ties between the Caspian and Black Sea regions, positioning both ports as integral gateways in the evolving global supply chain.
