The buzz followed remarks by US President Donald Trump, who hinted at discussions with a “top person” in Iran without revealing the identity. Reports quickly linked Ghalibaf to the alleged negotiations, a claim he has firmly denied.

Trump’s “Top Person” Remark Sparks Speculation

Donald Trump said that the United States and Iran held “very good and productive” discussions over two days. He described the talks as “in depth, detailed, and constructive,” adding that the tone of the conversation led him to temporarily pause planned US military action.

According to Trump, he instructed the US Department of War to postpone strikes targeting Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days. While speaking to reporters in Florida, he clarified that the negotiations did not involve the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei but rather a “top person” he described as “the most respected and the leader.”

Who is Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf?

Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf is one of Iran’s most prominent political figures, with a career spanning military, security, and political roles. According to Reuters:

• He is a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)

• Served as mayor of Tehran

• Held the role of national police chief

• Contested Iran’s presidential elections

Born in 1961 in northeastern Iran, Ghalibaf rose rapidly during the Iran-Iraq war, becoming a general within three years of joining the Guards. He later trained as a military pilot and eventually headed the Guards’ air force unit.
